I know this has been discussed in many threads of PW by fellow members and experts but I am only reiterating and sharing what I have learnt the hard way. So please bear with me. For everyone who has never bought or owned a 4x4 vehicle before, please bear in mind that you need some prior info, ample budget and stamina to sit at workshops.
Prior info includes the various engine types that were available in a particular model vehicle. You should also be aware of the most common engine problems (e.g Toyota 2L having head cracking and being under powered). You should know about engine fuel consumption. You may also know from where to source mechanical and body parts (of the particular vehicle in which you are interested and those are in your budget). This prior info may also include options and features that came in these vehicles.
Do get the vehicle inspected by an expert (friend, cousin etc.) or a mechanic before buying. You must know what kind of maintenance work it may require. Many 90s model vehicles are in need of engine and suspension work. After buying I had to change every bush, every seal, and every bearing of the suspension. Body work assessment is also necessary. You must also see condition of tyres and rims. Bear in mind that these are just a few important considerations.
Ample budget to be spent on your vehicle after purchase is also important. Take care of the mechanical issues first, then body work and finally accessories. Repair jobs of old 4x4 vehicles are expensive, and so are the parts (kabli or new). Don't expect that the previous owner is selling a completely running and flawless vehicle. On the contrary most of these vehicles have seen a lot of beating already during off roading and mountain area trips.
You should have knowledge about good mechanics and workshops, location of diesel laboratories, and famous lathe machine shops in your city. Which mechanic can do what kind of work is also very handy. I know one realizes the depth of water only after taking a dive in it but collecting as much info as you can beforehand will benefit you in many ways.
