Being here in USA, I come across this question every other day what is halal and what is haram. Yahan tu hamary musalman bhaee even "non zabiha ghost" bhee halal keh kar baichtay hain.. such a non sense.

accoriding Hanafi school of thought E120 is haram.E120 is a red food coloring which is derived from insects. AOA, i have been worrying about some food products being sold here in Pakistan and specially by large stores. Some of the products which i used to eat regularly are haram and i did not even knew. E.g

1. TIC TAC LIME/ORANGE - HARAAM e120 Carminic Acid from Cochineal
2. TIC TAC ORANGE - HARAAM e120
3. M&Ms Peanut - HARAAM e 120

Please can anybody confirm this? And if u know more products please list them down here with proof so that it may help other members.

We Pakis are the fussiest people in the whole wide world, when it comes to making fuss over bogus issues . Following are a few examples of our issues of interest:
1) Chicken haleem ko haleem kehna drusst nahi...isko chicken daleem bola jaaiy.

3) jootay (shoes) ladies under-garments, children pampers k brands main ultay seedhay religious patterns zabardasti talaash karna.
4) PEPSI... peena drusst nahi kion kay pepsi is an acronym of "Pay Every Penny Save Israel" (although "I" may also stand for Iraq, Iran, Islam)
5) Cocacola should be avoided because its logo when looked at in mirror resembles a religious text.
6) M & M khana jaaiz hay ya nahi
7) Q-Mobile should be avoided because Q is the first word of a declared ostracized religious community in Pakistan.
8) LAYS chips and Pringles chips haram hain for some similarly absurd reason.

The entire world combined cannot beat this NEXT LEVEL of senseless Paki religiosity... !!!

we get into some much complications. We do things which are strickly prohibted in Islam and there is no doubt about it.

As far as M&M are concerend.. If it is e120 its haram as per hanafi.. if its e124 its halal as its synthetic coloring. As I mentioned in earlier respone , the things we buy which are even halal are full of "Milawat".. what to talk about the confusing items..

My co-worker who is a orthdox jew.. dont eat m&M reason being the same e120.

My point was only meant for people who are willing to avoid haraam at any cost and not for people who takes this as extremism. Everyone has his/her own level of piousness. I even know people who do not wear black or green socks or shoes as they say that these are the colours of KAABA and GUMBAD E KHIZRA. (Yes according to your post this fits in the NEXT LEVEL of senseless Paki religiosity ) but as i have already said that everyone has his/her own level of piousness, so we cant do much here.

So it IS haraam to consume not only MnMs but every other food products which contain E 120. Hence it is upto the reader if he wants to avoid it or keep consuming it. I dont think that this is senseless reason to avoid it but a legit one.

The point is that locust is also an insect and it was eaten by sahaba.. so what im saying is maybe some insects are halal and some not..
