If you (or any friend) have connection in FBR, it is best to use it. Otherwise submit a letter by hand (obtain receipt) and ask for extension. Get a lawyer who deals with income tax cases; alternately get a FBR facilitator.

Got this notice back in May, I replied with accounts (simple PDF with income source and profit for the year) and bank statements in FBR Iris portal, the audit notice moved to Outbox after my reply. Its now 6 months since my reply, I haven't heard from them and my reply just sits in Outbox. Inbox is empty. Don't know if they have read it or not, since there are 1 million audits pending with FBR. They even have amnesty scheme going on now for people to automatically close their audit cases after paying penalty as its becoming impossible for FBR to handle so many cases.

You do not have to appear in FBR office for audit reply. You just need to send them your accounts and/or bank statements, if they need more documents they will ask. The notice to appear in FBR is called "Show Cause Notice". They send these notices when they find irregularities in tax returns and ask to appear in person, you can also send your tax lawyer in your place in that instance.

Hi bro thanks for reply I also heard that only we need to provide only business accounts bank statements online during specific period which year they need to audit.. Furthermore if they need more documents they will contact taxpayers for personal visit. If we will higher any lawyers they will charge huge amounts for such minor work and also will do same thing for bank statement etc

I have had bad experiences with local tax agents. Most of them have little information about local tax law, they just know how to submit tax forms online. After getting fed up of them, I spent a few days studying about tax law and actually reading Income Tax Ordinance. Previously I was clueless about everything like you. Better to have tax law awareness than relying on these inefficient tax agents.

Do note that local tax lawyers can even trap you and split bribes between FBR's tax commissioner and lawyer to settle cases. Happened with a relative.

i also received a similar notice from FBR against my 2017 income tax return. i am a salaried person. now i am regretting on my decision of filing income tax return. i dont know how to get out of this problem. there are 2 problems in my tax return.

1: i filed it Late ( i accept it, i was not aware of deadline thing earlier)
2: There is a mistake in it. (when i realized this mistake, i filed a request for revision, which is still pending from last 3-4 months)

now 5 days ago, i received this notice. i consulted different people on this, every one has his own opinion. some says hire a lawyer to handle this. some says, just upload your docs and thats it. but my point is, how FBR can conduct audit with actual data and wrong return until they allow me to make correction according to my documents. remember, request for correction is 3-4 months old whereas notice received just 5 days ago. dont know how to deal with it.

If want to do it under amnesty then you will have to pay 25% extra tax on top of calculated tax for that year after approval from commissioner. Otherwise submit reply with documents and wait months or years to get audited.

Well... Isn't it surprising that our Govt. on one hand is encouraging people to become Filers and come under tax net & on the other hand; sending audit notices to masses, without any discrimination; if account holder was a new filer, and / or filed tax returns voluntarily? or otherwise? The IRIS fbr portal is so difficult that a new filer will not be able to submit his / her returns by themselves, leaving them at discretion of tax lawyers / accountants who will get good business for submitting simple returns.

If by law, a min. fine of PKR 20,000 they have put per year, will it encourage people to become Filers?

I think, nothing can be done other than paying the penalty and regretting in becoming a Filer.

Last year, I voluntarily filed for FY: 2016-2017. Later, I also filed for FY: 2015-2016, being a good gesture and in good faith, and now I got the notice.

I filed for previous year, because: They gave the facility to file for previous years! and now they are penalizing / fining for submitting late returns? If they were to charge people with penalties, fines, etc. why did they allow for late filing of returns for previous years at the Ist place? What a Joke?

Those people who neither pay taxes, nor are active filers, Govt. is doing nothing about them.

Those people who pay taxes (like deduction of compulsory Income Tax, may be at source), but are not filers, Govt. is doing nothing about them.

But stupid people like us, or may be me! Who pay all sorts of taxes, and also file them being responsible citizens of the country and in Good faith, and even provide minute details of everything, are charged with penalties, fines, etc.

I have received the audit notice. I replied in iris with a request to extend the deadline for compliance. The reply is in outbox. but 177(1) notice has moved to completed tasks folder. it still shows due date of 23rd November. Does it mean that audit closed?? plz guide.

Well I have been searching for the legitimate solution of it and talked to different people of expertise in that matter and came to know that we have to pay the penalty and there is nothing we can do about it. If you decide to defend the case and hire a lawyer, he is going to charge you his fee and (Mithai k paisy to give to the officer to close the case) + the penalty fee. For example if lawyer asks for sum of 1 lac he will be having 100,000 - 20,000 (penalty fee for one year) - 30,000 = 50,000 in his pocket so its better to just pay the penalty to get away with this BS.
