depressed to see the situation at KKH. few years ago i was posted there. Always had a flask of black sugarless coffee when driving. Never let the driver drive. Managed the speed under 45 kph and 60 at straight stretch. In 3 years we have witnessed several accidents over the curves on every trip. Sadly it is also true the punjab plate cars top the list of wreckers.

I think driving fast is one thing and driving carelessly/recklessly is another. While the former should be acceptable depending on situation on ground the later must always be avoided.

An old Cherokee friend told me once while driving in rocky mountains, never take mountain tracks roads highways lightly. The natives respect that and remain safe while the outsiders act reckless n suffer.

KKH is ruthless if not used with care & respect,. Nature has its own way to show power.

sir @nagar1 it is so depressing to see KKH in this condition. It seems that you are local of the locality do you mind giving piece of mind about maintenance of KKH.

Is it that due to CPEC route there has been negligence for silk route maintenance by chance?? I mean FWO is the authority for the KKH are they active.

The area of KKH between Chilas and Raikot bridge near tatta pani is prone to landsliding. The mountains in that area are not very stable and landsliding is a regular occurrence. The road in that area is in such condition due to natural factors (terrain, rains etc) and not due to anyone's negligence.

As far as we have heard from the inception of CPEC , KKH is to be used for CPEC as the turns of Babusar pass are not feasible for big vehicles i.e trailers. The reason KKH is being ignored is that after Babusar Pass was opened govt shifted all its finances towards Naran-Babusar road's maintenance as it was the most commonly used route . Keep in view the tourism aspect also.
One reason might be the re alignment of KKH for Basha Diamer Dam that has started now. FWO might start working on KKH after Basha Diamer work.
Regarding the Chillas Tatta Pani patch, that remains a secret for all of us as the other side of river is plain area where both river and mountain are far from the road on most of the area. That route comes in use usually when there is a big block due to landsliding on KKH. That road is not paved though. The govt can make that route fully operational to avoid frequent blockages

I can tell you it is not easy building and maintaining roads in these areas . You have to remain on your toes 24/7 bcoz you can never predict nature. Sometimes a slight rain can cause road block for multiple days, sometimes even grazing animals on a mountain can cause a whole mountain of soil to come on road . While buliding KKH they had to use more gunpowder for blasting rocks than used in the 2nd world war.
We were residing in Skardu in 90s when a huge road block in Shingus on Gilgit Skardu road caused the road to be closed for 13 days...Just imagine being cut off from whole world for so many days

Road has been cleared now for traffic. Number of cars and injured or deceased not confirmed other than one person

Is it advisable to go in next two weeks? I am planning to to go 10th Sep'20, if someone can confirm the weather as it is rainy season and road conditions (in case it is blocked due to landsliding)
