Help required regarding maintenance of diesel engine

I have a 2.0D corolla which i bought new in 2006. I have driven it carefully and throughout used Mobil Delvic 1 oil. Now it has done around 65K km. Though I do not feel any knocking or any problem in the car but I have noticed that it has started giving some black smoke when driven even with soft foot(though every diesel gives some smoke but I have felt it has increased). I took it to a mechanic and he checked it and said that "gari ka blow sahi ha aur mobil oil kum nahi kar rahi so it is fine".

I need advise on maintaince as I have not done any kind of nozel treatment or any thing of that sort uptil now.

I will highly appreciate if some one can help me and suggest me that should I use any sort of Injector cleaner or any thing of that sort and will it have any effect on the smoke and any negative effects of the cleaner etc.

I think that the injector nozzles and possibly the high pressure pump itself needs cleaning and adjustment. You could try a cleaner, but if the fuel economy is not dropping off, you could let it go for a little more mileage before getting the work done.

As VCheng said, have the injectors checked calibrated and the pump adjusted. That should clear out the smoking problem. Try not to go for a no-smoke injection pump adjustment though - you'll lose power. At full power, a diesel will always smoke a little.

Heed to the above members advise, nothing else is required. Go to any Toyota dealership and tell them to carryout a 'SERVICE' on injectors and fuel pump, thats it. It may cost you a bit more then a roadside mechanic (diesel lab) but in the long run its worth it.

Assuming that you have only done the oil change uptill now, you must on every 3rd or 4th oil change, change the fuel (diesel) filter and air filter preferably on 2nd oil change.

And after every 6th or 7th oil change, change to some other brand like Petromin, ZIC or Fuchs and then revert to your original oil brand, your engine will like it. Its like you eat KARAHI every day for a week and then suddenly DAAL comes on the menu, you will like it more, dont you? Everybody needs a change, isn't it?

If you want to do a DIY, then get a good Carb cleaner for diesel engines, (I used NASA CARB CLEANERS) open the air filter box, spray it in and then start engine and rev it up (repeat this three four times) and then open up fuel return line (just a bolt on the engine nearer to you) and ensure that orifice is clear OR if you like to use fuel tank versions of cleaners then pour in with full fuel tank and go out for a very very long drive and fill the tank again when its half full, that will keep the carb cleaner going for longer time.

And btw, keep your injectors and fuel pump serviced every 25K KM in Pakistan.

I have a bitter experience to share and what i learnt from this you should not get the pump settings changed unless there is some extreme...65K is just nothing at all even 130K would not be, specially keeping in view your care about the ride. Just the nozzle replacement & tappet adjustment would suffice and that too after 100K, if you feel like. Right now the only thing you may do (rather DIY) is this nozzle cleaning by means of some fuel additive or the way prescribed above (which should not require any mechanical work). keep the air filter clean...i get it blown every week...it helps alot reducing the smoke and regaining some lost power....review your oil drain & filter change intervals, both the fuel and oil. You may go for an oil brand change as well....mine was delo gold and now i am using ZIC5000..i felt the difference in pick, economy, & performance...
Just focus on TOP CARE...and DONOT indulge yourself in any mechanical work....you may end up in a total mess....the original and genuine settings are never restored....no matter what these mechanics here are not so educated and enlightened as we expect them to be....

ur diesel car will smoke more depending on where u fill diesel from as well.
Attock pumps = more smoke
good pso pumps = least smoke

clean out fuel lines, injectors etc using any sort of injector cleaner.
change fuel filter at least every 10k km. thats a must for diesels!
and use good engine oil. period.

I would suggest checking your valve clearances, if they are unusually tight - your engine will not breathe properly and have less air considering the fuel amount - and would have soot as the result - coupling that with high EGTs and loss in power and economy.

It'll usually be a shim over bucket job - and the clearances are stamped on the valve cover itself.
