Help to buy Surf 1993-1995, Pajero 1994-1996

Good Day!

From Mehran to Margalla to Indus and then XLI. Now as family member has increased to 7 and i wanted to have SUV. Since last few days , i've read few threads regarding SUV's about its mileage , engines etc. But so far its hard to digest, when information is scattered and its a whole new world too. ( i use to read threads too 5 years back , because 've seen people converting a normal jeep into monsters )
I was expecting a Better Surf model in 15 LAC but prices are way higher than it should be. I've seen in this forum people have bought 98 model surf in 9-10 lac but back 2013 or 2014. At current scenario you can call me Noob and i dont want myself to get ripped off from any of the scammer out here in Karachi . Need your assistance in below:

1. Which Surf models, I can get in range of 15 Lac?
2. So far people have recommended 1KZ engine, what if i'm unable to find any with this engine installed? which engine its should be atleast.
3. Any Expert Mechanic In karachi for SUV or any Club of SUV with whom i can learn about SUV practically?

Dil ki khuwaish to thi L/C loun but unki maintenance ka parh kr socha rehny hi do. and Prado ka dil b tha lkn for atleast better prado i think person should have 2 million in pocket and 3-4Lac for Preventive Maintenance.
If you think L/C can be a choice then do share Pros compare to Surf.

there are 2 surfs on OLX, one is 1993 asking around 15 and other is same model but need body interior etc restoration asking around 11 Lac.

but what if that 1993 guy agrees to sell in 13.5? is it worth buying?

another one i got to know from one of my friend that in punjab he has Surf 92/14 3400 petrol, amnesty cleared and all documents are ok.
Asking is around 19.50. but may be he can give at 16. Pics attached below

It's better to go for a Suzuki Apv under 1.5 million.

Brother rightly said, but APV cannot be compare with SUV.

I've 3 cars right now in garage coure, mehran and xli (2011 - market value 12.75 or + as its total genuine and have kept with extreme care)
So, it will going to replace my Xli. and only purpose of this car will be long route with full family. Obv, more power engine than sedan.

Even 15 or 16 lac for 92/93 Surf is too much, but because of this unusual increase in market prices, it's best to get a low mileage Surf which need body/interior works with lower price tag so that you can restore it yourself and then you have a peace of mind, rather than getting a restored Surf and then spending money on its maintenance afterwards, if that is not restored properly.
That is just my suggestion.
Good luck in finding a good Surf with low mileage which will of course a big challenge for you.

there there is one model 93 whose asking is around 11 lac. so you are saying to prefer that one on others.

But right now, i am also looking for Pajero 1994-1995 model

as one guy has offered 94 model 98 import diesel 4m40, final 13. Karachi number and body changed

Provided its low mileage and need restoration. Try to negotiate the price and then in 3-4 lac, it will be restored into the best of its condition and you will also have a peace of mind as you done it yourself.

Pajero 94-95 is also a good option in this budget, but then its maintenance will cost you more than Toyota Surf, rest is your choice.

You are absolutely right, but still PAJERO is PAJERO :P. I just forget the title of thread, where a guy was looking for Surf and end up buying Pajero:P

I've 1-2 months, so i will look around for better surf and also try learning how to inspect 4 X 4 myself. because i always prefer inspecting car by myself instead of any USTAD, who only need our 10k and will let u buy whatever car you will ask him to inspect.

5 door surf is 5 seater, not 7. Pajeros and prados are 7 seaters with 3rd row seating.

it will be very difficult to find a reliable SUV that is worthy of family trips in 1.5 million
if you can extend to 2.0 and with preventive maintenance 2.5 million, you will find options that can be considered but they will still be 20+ years old.

No 20+ years old SUV will be better than your xli expect having more seats.

You are right, its cringey to sell XLI which is 100% perfect and buy 20+ years old suv
if i would have 2million then it wont be that much issue for me.

Anyhow, i've planned to look around for better surf. If find any then will buy it immediate.

I really wonder why people are destroying these cars by using CNG.

what you think that will it worth buying a SUV having CNG removed? (I never used CNG in any car, so same i wont be doing in SUV).

Interesting thread and very relatable. I have had discussions with SUV owners and YES these oldies are white elephants!.

I think you should not sell your XLi. I am assuming its your daily runner and so you should keep it. An old SUV is not really a potential daily runner.

I have also been having the same obsession lately where I am thinking about replacing a reliable Civic with an old SUV.

And yes Surfs and Pajeros make the bulk of my saved ads on this platform.

A friend has suggested that I sell my other car ( Cuore ) that's mostly used for household purposes and not really driven that much and buy an old 1st gen Turbo intercooler Pajero (1988-1990). That way I will not lose a reliable family sedan and also will get to experience the drive of a SUV and importantly will experience the process of sourcing parts and finding reliable mechanics. This seems a lot more practical to me honestly but then again everyone has their understanding and way of doing things. And of course if the experiment fails I can always sell it off and buy a small car again.

Someone once told me here on Pakwheels forum (I wish I had remember their username so that I could tag them) If you really do want an SUV that is trouble free then buy something at a premium price or even at a price over the market rate and then spend a little more on it to bring it up to speed and then you should be able to drive with peace of mind that your SUV will not break down while you are driving your family around all dressed up for a formal gathering.
