Honda Civic 1997 with Automatic Transmission

OK So this is my first experience with Honda Automatic Transmission. Whenever I change the gear position from P (Parking) to R or for that matter D4, D3, the car jerks slightly and one can feel it very clearly. This happens whenever the gear is shifted from any one position to the other. I asked a couple of friends who had automatic Toyota Corollas and they said the jerk was there but very negligeable. Honda Technician said that the jerks are far less in newer models because older models were AUTOMATIC whereas their newer series is PROSMATIC. So is there any way I can minimize the jerk because with every jerk comes a clanking/thud sound from the gear box/engine?

Unless your idle speed is little off set it must not happen, if the car is on an inclinde it will jerk slu=ightly more. If it were on a level surface it wont jerk much. In the older models one always experiences a slight shake when the clutch engages itself to the engine,, it is perfectly normal. The sound that accopmanies the jerk is a bit serious, there should never come any sound, except fro the dry brakes. Some times when you dont push down hard enough on the brakes, the engine pushes the car forward and the brakes make a squeeking noice or the clanking noise as you have stated.

did u ever change the gear oil? i guess not, and use automatic tranny gear oil, its viscousty is thin like power steering oil.
press the brakes fully while changing gear positions like from P to R. yes i also hear a "Thak" sound from my 98 auto VTI if i dont press the brake and put it in D4 while the car is rolling.........

Well that explains it I guess. Thanks Rashid and hash4. Yes the gear oil needs a change and its been almost two full years when the brakes were clened and maintained. Oh well, back to the mechanic.

In Automatic cars, Gear oil need to change every 20,000kms Max., Replace it with Mobil 1/Zic synthetic auto transmission Oil.
