Honda Civic 2015 Rebirth 1.8 Prosmatec Catalytic Converter Cleaning

Hi everybody,

We have Civic 2015 Rebirth 1.8 Prosmatec and so far the car has been driven around 240k kms. Now it seems it has a choked catalytic converter. The car is in the family since purchase in 2015 and I was told that the catalytic converter was cleaned/washed once, around 4-5 years ago. Car gives small Jerks while we drove at low speed of 40-60 km/hr with soft foot. Pick of the car is also a bit slow now. I have heard lot about catalytic converter cleaning. I would like to know from where in Lahore can i get the catalytic converter "clean/washed' without getting it damaged and if anyone has first hand experience getting this service, please share where to get it done from.

It is in the business interests of these cat "cleaning" places to say that your catalytic converter is "choked". What is the evidence for this? There are oxygen sensors on both ends of the catalytic converter. What do they say? What is a choked reading, and what is a normal reading?

You will find that there is no such thing as catalytic converter cleaning. Catalytic converters are very expensive, can contain platinum, and are often stolen or harvested in developed countries, let alone by anyone successfully persuading you into letting them take it out of your sight for a moment. There are many threads discussing catcons on the forum. Feel free to search for them.

Perhaps your transmission is causing these issues, and perhaps the "pick" issue is your tappets never being adjusted in 240,000 kilometers.

In a workshop setting we test cat converter blockage on a regular basis, we follow the recommended old guidelines from Corning (from the 70s) to test for pressure differential across the two combs

A max pressure differential of 1-2 psi on a 4 cyl modern engine at idle to fast idle is checked, anything above this means the converter needs to be replaced, please note the replaced word.

Sometimes we encoutner poisoned converters like silicon coated faults or coolant ingress or sometimes the engine ran too lean for a very very long time and burnt the blanket around it causing exhaust bypass, in this case the pressure reading is A OK but there is almost negligible temperature difference between the inlet and oulet (converter not starting the thermal reactor) in this case the converter is replaced too.

Washing the converter with water actually damages the fire blanket around the cores.
