First of all congratulations on your marriage
now coming towards the question
choice is good for going in the trip by air. (only risk is of flight not going due to weather , keep some extra days in plans preemptively)
next is what to visit
before any further planning kindly consider following
1.mode of transport??? if you have a vehicle in gilgit ,thats great. if no then hiring is the option , obviously you have to make a bargain over the fares
- accomodation . not really an issue as there are hotels, camping sites that offer neat and clean environment with an ambiance.
now coming towards what to visit in the 8-10 days journey
- from gilgit , you can go to hunza as its 1.5 hrs from here, stay and have magnificent view of rakaposhi in its foothills, you can even stay at hunza as it offers much for the stays. in hunza you can visit altit, baltit fort, farms, enjoy fresh apricot juices etc.
- you can move towards khunjerab now. . you will see attabad lake , boat over there. enjoy tunnels . next you can have a stay on the same day at the camping sites near passu cones view (mountains) . its very economical if you camp and enjoy the star gazing etc.
-next day move for the khunjerab pass via sost , at the khunjerab top, there is nothing to enjoy for long as it will take you maximum of 1 hr to spend on the top. from here you can rush back to hunza directly also
-now from hunza you can approach towards naltar also. its also a one day trip and a place must to be visited..
to be honest i think 3 4 days are enough for the gilgit- khunjerab area , what you can do is to go towards skardu side and visit the deosai plains also(as you have days and you have come so long , one must vist and explore the other areas also).
-from hunza you can go to gilgit and from there you can got to skardu (4 - 5 hrs) . skardu is yet another mystical and much beautiful place than the gilgit area.
-next day visit the deosai plains and manage if you can camp over there.
-you can also visit the shangrila resorts,, satpara lake ,upper kachura and lower kachura lakes . i think these would be enough for skardu as rest places are far and have very hard drives .
-next day you can fall back to gilgit and you can go to astore village . a gem of a place to visit. road is bit dangerous but the natural beauty compansates it, you can also stay at astore in some guest house or i think there are also some camping sites,.
next fall back to gilgit and come back safely.
-these are just the suggestions that i shared rest depends upon your pla, road conditions etc. little suggestions that keep warm clothes, digger shoes etc, emergency lights. everyone has their choices, in gilgit and hunza you have options to visit different hotels and choose from them, even in camping sites you can choose as there are many.
-do rely on the local peoples's information
-roads are extremely good till khunjerab , except skardu one is bit rough and naltar area a little as it got flooded at some place.
-do ask local for the road conditions as they know it.
-roads are very safe in all aspect , i came back from khunjerab at 2:30 am (night) at it was all safe.
- keep fuel in car and top up the tanks if you are on own vehicle in this area.
best of luck . have a safe journey .
Regards
