How bad are older models of XLI, GLI, city, Civic etc.?

I want to buy a sedan but I do not have much money. Cannot spend 40 45 lacs on new car. But I see people selling older models in 14 15 or 20 lacs. Even older models around 12.

Are not they still better than a suzuki cultus which also sells for 27 lac? Say a 2005 model civic, or 2010 model gli etc if i find under 16 17?

What kind of issues can I face? Would it be a huuuge risk?

If well maintained and taken care of, there is no such risk at all. These old cars may be overpriced to some extent in the used market but much better than these new dinkies selling for 2-3Million.

Exactly this. Nowadays I have my hands on a Mehran 2013 that has been driven in my family since brand new. That car really drives me crazy with hr waqt k mslay and its road performance on bad roads. Too uncomfortable.

If I can get anything decent in 2008 2009 where I do not have to pour 50k monthly in maintenance i will buy that rather.

Any recommendations?

You can find Civic Reborn 2006-2012 or Corolla GLi/Altis 2008-2011 prefacelift. City 2009-2015 is also a good option. Manual varients will give much better fuel economy in these old sedans and you just need to find a good example. Reborn has a few common issues such as hydraulic steering pump oil leak and broken engine mounts however it's easily fixable but Corolla doesn't have any such issues.

What kind of average am I looking at with manual Corolla 2008-2011 or Civic Reborn 2006-2012? How much does it drop on automatic?

Also is automatic transmission on these very old cars - is it reliable?

I had a GLi 2013 which had the same 2NZ 1.3l engine as 2008-2011 pre facelift, used to give me to 12-13 KM/L in City with AC but don't know about Altis of same model. Reborn Manual easily gives 10-11 whereas Prosmatec ones gives about 8-9 with AC. Reliability depends on previous maintenances done by owner so it all depends on the car's condition.

I would say buying something brand new in your budget if you want complete peace of mind for another 5-6 years , or at least something 2018 model plus.

I suggest you to buy a well maintained old sedan. I drive both 2022 cultus and 2014 city. The drive and road grip of city is much better being a bigger car. However cultus has good fuel economy and softer suspension as compared to city. If you want peace of mind for at least 5 years, then buy a new cultus. Otherwise old sedans are much better.
