How important is the Thermostate Valve in a car?

I want to know how important is thermostat valve in the car.
Recently my car heated up due to thermostat valve choke and stuck due to rust which needed to be replaced.
But my mechanic didn't replace and just remove it. Though I didn't face any heat up issue but concious about that and asked mechanic to replace several time but he said its okay without the valve and no harm to engine or performance.
Car is Santro Club 2005 Model with mileage about 200k, never overhauled though.

Need expert advise should I put new thermostat valve and keep running without it?

If you want to maintain good engine health, thermostat valve is very important. your mechanic has probably made the fan 'direct' and as winter is approaching your car will hardly ever reach its optimum functioning temperature (98 C), at which the engine will experience minimum engine wear and tear as well as good efficiency.
faulty thermostat valve is common in santro, one possible solution is to change thermostat valve but there can be other reasons

Radiator fan is automatic and never make the fan direct.

well its normal practice of our mechanics to remove the valve. Valve function is to regulate colant circulation according to engine temprature, it will open when egnine is going too hot than required and it will close when engine is too cold for its optimum operation. If will also help to warm up the engine quicker in cold mornings.

while a stuck valve can cause over heating or no heating in cold weather, its good to replace it and not remove it completely. If you still having over heating issues after that, then problem lies somewhere else so fix that. it could be clogged radiator, a faulty thermostatic- fan switch, or worst a head gasket!

i think u r using tap water in cooling system due to which the Tstat valve stuck with rust .use coolant 50/50 mixture and buy a new Tstate valve and put it on the place.and wait for GURU g:P and experts

Too often I hear people and so called mechanics saying that thermostats aren't necessary in a hot climate. A thermostat controls the internal temperature of the engine and keeps that temperature constant. Most engines are designed to run at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius and above.
I would like any one to name me a country that has a temperature that high!! If you run without a thermostat then parts of the engine will run too cool and this can cause accelerated wear. Also, the engine as a whole, will be running at uneven temperatures and therefore, is susceptible to failures. Especially if the engine is made from dissimilar metals i.e. steel engine block with an aluminium cylinder head. If your thermostat becomes faulty by all means take it out, but make sure another correct one is put in its place.

Hi removing the thermostat ..plays havoc with the auto choke..the ecu will pump more petrol in thinking the cars cold..wasting fuel..wasting money..??

Time to find a better mechanic, - This one just is making sure your engine actually fails quick by overcooling, and he can make loads of money from you when you ask for an overhaul job in the very near future.

The crankcase blowby is quite toxic and contains water vapour too specially in humid climates and it gets mixed with oil, HOT oil makes sure the oil remains oil and not a slurry of oil and water. The thermal efficiency of the engine is also ensured by the thermostat valve. Every machine has operational parameters and requirement set by the manufacturer, system temperature is one of them too. What makes you think that your mechanic knows better than the manufacturer.

Mechanics wants to get Rid of Thermostat valves in-order to avoid short lived major damages resulting from jammed valves but in longer run Engine will wear down quickly. Always pay extra to get a genuine valve installed in your vehicle and rest of the clarifications has already been made by other members.

Of all the engines I have worked on I have not seen jammed valves - but I have always used proper genuine valves. When I asked a bunch of mechanics in Pakistan about the Tstat valve - their answers were usually - ustaad ne sikhaya thaa.

Their ustaads worked on ancient POS cars, their ustaads worked on prehistoric cars which probably had magneto ignition and crank handle and really bad cooling system setup - and they did not want to burn their hands working on the engine.

Bro u just need to do two things
Fill ur radiator will coolant to avoid rusting and heating issues (i filled it with 90% coolant and 10% water and i,m 100% tension free about checking water or coolant in radiator it remains same all the time)
Buy a new Genuine valve and put in.....
Car manufacturer are not Pagal to put a useless item in the car which is doing so much 4 ur car as mentioned by others
