Hi guys ,
As I was a bit free so I decided to do some modification on my 80 which was getting slower and weaker day by day.
I went to a couple of workshops and asked them to replace my existing exhaust with a 3 inch straight pipe. I was quoted 22K and 30K so I decided to do this myself.
I started it last weekend and will be done by that day after tomorrow. I started opening the joints and where I could not I just cut the whole exhaust out. It was a 2 inch pipe but it was pinched at almost 3 places. I bought 13 ft of 3 inch stainless steel pipe and a 3 inch resonator. As 3 inch pipe is very difficult to turn so I bought 4 elbows along to create bents. I have a small electric welding station at my home that me and my father used to install the gate at our house.
During the fabrication I have been driving the car for chores without any exhaust and it felt very light but the turbo sound was quite high. Before the exhaust removal I never heard the turbo spool and the car was really heavy to drive. Even I had to press the clutch when the car was slow.
Today I started installing the fabrication. I did all the measurements carefully but somehow the pipe coming out of exhaust manifold (of turbo) is touching the fender from inside creating vibrations. and I yet have to make the couplings to hang the part of exhaust pipe after the resonator. Further to save the time and effort, I decided not to run the exhaust all the way to the end, instead I gave the exit to the exhaust from the side under the rear door close to the tyre. (Deleted the muffler as well). For now the rear part of the exhaust is hanging by ropes. I will fix that on Sunday along with the fix for the pipe touching the body.
I have experienced a little bit more torque at low end and can feel the car breathing more easily. Not so much effect at the higher rpms. The downside is the extra noise at high revs along with the turbo sound. I will try to post the picture and video tomorrow. I wanted to take some pictures during the process but the hands were too dirty always to touch my phone.
Inspiration for the project came from @hayzin
to all, please give me any suggestions or lesson learnt before I wind up this project.
