You did not mention which car you possess.
However, the old school ’pulling negative wire off the battery terminal’, installing the steering lock will not be very helpful if the thief has what it takes to break ’em.
It depends on your car really, if it is expensive, let's say a Toyota Corolla, the thieves will try anything in their will to steal the car away, if not, steal whatever might be valuable, e.g. Infotainment system, battery, etc.
What can you do?
- Install a tracking system into your car and get insurance if your car is very expensive.
- In Federal B. Area & Gulberg Town in Karachi, people remove their car batteries at evening when they leave their cars parked outside.
- Install a ’Kill Switch’ in your car and hide it somewhere. NOT below the steering rack as it is the first place for the thief to check to comprehend failure of hot wire.
What you should know:
- Cars with immobilizers can still be stolen if the thieves are equipped with a cracking device.
- Car if not stolen completely, can still have its valuables stolen. (Personal experience with a brand new Civic Reborn in 2009).
