How to read oil viscosity chart

Dear All Assalam o alaikum,

Can anyone explain how do we read the oil viscosity chart.

like here i have attached the chart of cultus.

what is the temperature range mentioned at the bottom? is it the surrounding temperature (atmospheric temperature)?

anyone kindly explain

use a ruler on facing squarely upwards on the lines of the temperature scale - inspect which viscosity applies best.

Well but my question was that which temperature is being referred to in the temperature scale? Is it the surrounding ambient temperature? like in karachi the max temp is usually around 40C so does that mean that we use 5w40 or 10w40 grade oil?

Also if SJ or SL type oil is recommended then can we use SN type oil?

yes that is ambient temperature - and yes you can use SN rated for SL rated engines as it is usually backwards compatible unless otherwise noted.
