How to shift from 2H to 4H and 4L

I have recently bought mini Pajero. It's my first experience and first Pajero. I am really a dumb guy and having no experience in Pajero. I want to know to how to shift 2H 4H 4L. And what they do.

I am seeing a small liver like gear and Its having some values on it like

4H
--pressed 4L
2H

But the liver moving only up and down then why do I pressed the liver.

Can anybody help me and let me know what is the proper way to shift from 2H to 4H and 2H to 4L and 4H,4L to 2H.

I shall be very thankful to you fellows.

its same as you change gears, grab the lever and put at the required place, 4x4 usually gets stuck so do it while car is moving at 0 speed.

Thanks qwertypoiu. I need to ask more question can you help me. Please give me your cell number so I can talk with you easily. Currently I am having mini Pajero 660cc non turbo manual transmission. And the pick is too low. It dosent go above 80km/h on 2H. It should go to 100 at least. Engine make loud too much but the speed is nothing. Can you pleas help what is the problem. I have checked it from Mchanic but no one giving me correct answer. I am from Faisalabad.
