How to stop rats from messing up the engine

With cars parked for extended periods rats are nesting in engines. what type of remedies for stopping them do you all recommend.

i have used rat killer that is from as i remember mortien or maybe baygon one.

the rat killer is in blue color small uneven pieces u can put in the engine room at different places.
one or two rat will eat and get killed and then will never sit in the car. thats my experience.
