Thats the handbrake /parking brake cable. The way it works is that one side is pulled in by the interior lever, this cable transfers the movement to other side of vehicle.

Its a very old style of doing it. Cheap too, Breaks a lot too.

Thats only acceptable as temporary repair to get you home.

Thanks for the info. Why do i see this only on some surfs and not on hiluxes? Toyota shouldnt cheap out on brakes at least.

Most older hilux surf in the world have broken parking brakes and are held by the gearbox to park. Even when new customers of such vehicle dont give a crap about such nazakatt.

What you see here is the cheapest way to make a parking brake,

Btw, late models dont have this, they use the same setup as corollas.

After driving toyotas i feel safer in my shitbox es civic 🤣. I meant toyota is supposed to be reliable and a thin wire hanging beneath the car isnt the most reliable thing.

Should the cv be taken off and cleaned, removing the old contaminated grease or is it OK just to wipe off some of the old grease and fill its with fresh one?

Depends on the situation

A small pin hole discovered immediately means grease is not too bad and can be rebooted, however a big gaping hole requires a full clean and repack and most times replacement of cv joint as dirt mixed with greased wears it out.
