But, it was possible at the start to blast to avoid today situation.
Our govt. Putting the lives of common men on risk by delaying.
Govt. Should blast it in the start.
Govt. Is still not taking it serious, govt should deploy more machines in this work and try to solve this as early as possible.
But, govt. Will not do it on urgent basis.
May be they are thinking about other side.
If it brust naturally and cause massive flooding down stream, them flood will destroy major portion of kkh and may be some damages to tarbela dam.
In this process govt. Will have a excuse to make more contracts with rpp and most know about these contracts:'(.

Search of missing persons with the help of canine component.
Evacuation. Over 6777 (incl 292 student) people transported with the help of Helicopters.
Helicopters Sorties. 741 Aviation sorties have been flown so far.

10 x Boats along with OBMs and operators provided to GBDMA for restoring ground link with Upper Hunza.

This is a summary of the current situation with the landslide. Data correct to 3rd May 2010. Red indicates a rising trend from the previous reading and purple a falling trend. Orange numbers indicate no change. All data courtesy of Focus Humanitarian Assistance unless otherwise indicated. Please see notes of caution at the end of this post.

Current estimated date of overtopping: 8th June 2010. Overtopping is likely to occur sooner than this date.

Depth of lake (NDMA data) : 89.18 m
Depth of lake (Focus data): 90.24 m
Freeboard (Focus data): 20.10 m
Length of lake: 13.48 km (Note recent rapid increase)

Rate of inflow: 53.06 cubic metres per second
Total seepage (NDMA data): 0.99 cubic metres per second
Total seepage (Focus data): 1.28 cubic metres per second

Average rate of decrease of freeboard over the last ten days: 54.40 cm per day
Number of days to over-topping at current rate of freeboard loss: 39 days

Estimated date of over-topping based on rate of loss of freeboard for last ten days (see note below): 8th June 2010. Actual over-topping is likely to occur earlier than this date.

Important: The calculation of days to over-topping is subject to substantial uncertainty and must not be used for planning purposes. The rate at which the lake fills changes considerably with time according to variations in the rate of inflow, the rate of seepage, the rate of excavation of the channel, the shape of the valley etc. Under some circumstances, such as an earthquake, a landslide into the lake or rapid piping failure the dam could fail prior to overtopping.

No life jackets, that is dangerous. God forbid if any boat capsizing happens, we would lose many precious lives. Life jackets are not very expensive and must be made compulsory for all the people crossing the lake in boats.

Life Jackets are offered if you are traveling on one of the boats which are managed by Pak Army. For All other boats which are normally used for trade, shifting homes, luggage etc. doesnt have them. In my previous posts I highlighted this point that this area needs funding along with shuttle service for the people from KArimabad till Gojal

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has shown concern over the problems of the people in Hunza emerging out of the submergence of their houses in the Hunza Lake.

The Prime Minister directed Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan to personally visit the area and assess the situation. He asked him to examine the problems of the affected people and adopt immediate measures to give relief to them.

ISLAMABAD, May 11: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday sought a report from Governor Gilgit Baltistan over the relief and rehabilitation measures for the landslide affectees of the Hunza valley and steps for draining the lake.

A massive landslide in Hunza District on January 4 led to blockade of the Hunza River and creation of an artificial lake where water level is constantly rising. The Frontier Works Organization is creating a spillway to drain the lake.

President Zardari who had been in touch with the local authorities and had directed immediate relief and rehabilitation measures on January 4 and March 8, enquired about the progress made so far and emergency measures in case the artificial dam bursts.

The President asked the Gilgit Baltistan administration to provide an immediate update and progress on the latest situation as the water in the lake continues to rise and poses a threat to the people downstream. He said the authorities must be prepared in advance to meet any eventuality and ensure that there was no loss of life.

He assured that the federal government would do all to provide shelter, food and medical help for the displaced people through the National Disaster Management Authority.

NDMA Brief on Atta Abad

1. General.Village Atta Abad lies approximately 15 km east of Karimabad and 100 kms from Gilgit in the Hunza Valley astride KKH and River Hunza. The village comprised approximately 143 houses along the slopes leading to River Hunza. The KKH runs across the Hunza River on to the Khunjarab Pass.
2. The Incident. Around mid day, on 4 January 10, a massive land slide activity triggered in the area which continued for few hours at high intensity and intermittently for the following weeks. The massive slide blocked Hunza River / KKH and 2-3 km portion of both came under the debris, leaving approximately 25,000 population of Upper Hunza stranded and cut off from rest of the country. The Hunza River Blockage has resulted in accumulation of water upstream, resulting into creation of a vast lake and submergence of KKH.
3. Effects
a. Blockage of Hunza River.
b. Blockage and inundation of KKH.
c. Creation of a vast lake.
d. Inundation of upstream areas.
e. Population of upper Hunza stranded and cut off from rest of the country.
f. Threat to downstream areas / population.
g. Closure of trade route.
3. Losses.Although, loss of life in Village Atta Abad was prevented through timely evacuation of all residents, however, a huge mass of debris hit Village Sarat after bouncing off the mountain across the gorge. Which resulted in following losses in the village:-
a. Dead - 20* (Village Attabad/Sarat)
b. Injured - 8* ( -do- )

d. Safety of people living down stream and rehabilitation of Displaced Persons.
