Mr. Wajhat Malik was in Gojal and returned on April 4th. Situation is more or less the same, water can take another Month to reach the spillway.

There were three basic needs identified by him, which I would like to share with all of you:

People of the Upper Gojal rely on Potatoes farming, much of the land in Ayeenabad & Sishkut has been submerged, the rest of the land needs Potato seeds and fertilizers, due to no road link and expensive cost of traveling goods via ship, people of Gojal are finding it difficult to cultivate.
Shuttle Service Between Karimabad & Ata Abad, this will really help the people who have to travel from the other side of the lake till Karimabad, currently people there have to book private jeeps which are expensive & there is no bus service.
Bigger Boats, the lake is huge and road link resumption may take a year, currently few fiber glass boats are being used by Army to provide the free service but its not compatible.
Life Jackets, Life Jackets are not there for the people who have to hire a private boat to ship goods (necessities), Wajhat quoted an incident of Boat roll over, luckily it was near the lake's bank, but there was no life jacket. As per my personal experience, human body wouldnt survive for more than 10min in that freezing cold water! (cost of life Jacket is 1800)

Deployment of USAR Team
NDMA immediately airlifted USAR detachment from 5-8 Jan 2010 to the disaster site for conducting operations.
Search of missing persons with the help of canine component.
Evacuation. Over 6123 (incl 292 student) people transported with the help of Helicopters and other means.
Helicopters Sorties. 705 Aviation sorties have been flown so far.
Boats
10 x Boats along with OBMs and operators provided to GBDMA for restoring ground link with Upper Hunza.

I think here Govt is again proving a parasite for eating taxes for millions for bullet proff cars and we should make some collection of funds by peoples and help those persons.

Our govt. Is very slow as usual in this desaster.
As per figurs provided by "autophil" remaining excavation work is about 33,330 cubic meters. And govt. Is doing about 750 c/m daily. Which means, remaing work will be done in next 44-45 days. No one knows, what can happen in next few days as snow will be melting quickly.

Hunza landslide review meeting with stakeholders held at NDMA

(Islamabad) In order to review and assess the latest situation of the Hunza landslide, a meeting with all the key stakeholders was held on 19th April, 2010 at the NDMA, which was presided over by Mr Niamatullah Khan, Acting Chairman, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The meeting reviewed various aspects of the landslide including making of a spillway cut in the dam created as a result of the landslide, relief provided to the affectees and the Evacuation Plan revised and updated by the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority in the light of Dam Break Study conducted by the NESPAK.

The representative of GBDMA briefed the meeting on the steps taken and preparedness plan, incase of breach/ collapse of the Dam. The Pakistan Red Crescent Society’s representative informed the meeting about their efforts regarding provision of relief to the people in the affected areas. Acting Chairman, NDMA instructed that all the organizations involved in relief activities in Hunza should be taken on board and mutual contacts be established for better coordination.

Brig. Sajid Naeem, Member Operation, NDMA informed that a helicopter is located at Gilgit to carry out the day-to-day relief activities in the area while more could be dispatched in case of any demand by the local authorities. Moreover, transportation facilities through boats are also being provided to the people across the blockage of Hunza River and the KKH due to landside.

On a point regarding opening and rehabilitation of the Karakoram Highway, Mr. Niamatullah Khan asked the NHA to chalk out a contingency plan for early realignment of the KKH to commence work soon after the water is released so that trade activities between Pakistan and China are not affected after re-opening of borders in May 2010.

The representative of Frontier Works Organization (FWO) briefed the participants that so far his organization has spent Rs 54 million and over 20-meter cut has been completed to construct a spillway in the dam. However, as per revised plan the depth of the Spill Way cut is being constructed up to 30 meter deep and over 170,000 cubic meters which is over 86% of the total target of 196,000 cubic meters, has already been completed.

If the weather conditions improve the FWO needs approximately 12 days to finish their Excavation work. He added that due to splashy and clay soil the machines tend to sink while heavy boulders require frequent blasting which is making the work difficult and slow.

The experts dispelled the impression that there is any danger of a sudden outburst of the dam as reported by certain sections in the media.

The Chairman, emphasized the need for closer interaction for identifying recovery and rehabilitation priorities, satisfying the people’s concerns and enabling all in meeting the challenges in a better manner.

He thanked the valuable inputs of the technical experts, saying that post-disaster coordination between all the stakeholders can ensure better management, rehabilitations, and risk reduction.

The attendees of the meeting consisted of representatives of WAPDA, NESPAK, Cabinet Division (Emergency Relief Cell), Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Provincial Disaster Management Authority, E-in-C Branch Pak Army, Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Pakistan.

RESPONSE BY NDMA

Deployment of Field Detachment. NDMA deployed a field detachment from 5 Jan to 2 Feb 10 on the incident site on 24/7 basis for coordinating the response of various agencies.
Deployment of USAR Team
NDMA immediately airlifted USAR detachment from 5-8 Jan 2010 to the disaster site for conducting operations.
Search of missing persons with the help of canine component.
Evacuation. Over 6574 (incl 292 student) people transported with the help of Helicopters.
Helicopters Sorties. 735 Aviation sorties have been flown so far.
Boats
10 x Boats along with OBMs and operators provided to GBDMA for restoring ground link with Upper Hunza.

@autophile, thank U for keeping everyone updated. As per Dr. David Petley, a landslide expert and Wilson Professor at the University of Durham, 62 more days to spill for a spill over to take place.

Islamabad, April 20: Keeping everything (meaning water inflow rate, seepage and height of the lake barrier) constant a spillover from the lake formed on Hunza River is most probably going to take 62 more days.

This logical projection has been made on a dedicated blog initiated by Dr. David Petley, a landslide expert and Wilson Professor at the University of Durham. Dr Petley had recently visited the landslide area and presented a report that helped in bringing this lake hazard to the limelight. (The Wine Network)

This is a summary of the current situation with the landslide. Data correct to 18th April 2010. Red indicates a rising trend from the previous reading and purple a falling trend. New information: The rate of decrease of freeboard is accelerating. The latest estimated date of overtopping is 19th June 2010 (see notes below)

Depth of lake (NDMA data) : 80.12 m
Depth of lake (Focus data): 82.24 m
Freeboard (vertical distance between lake level and base of spillway): 28.34 m
Length of lake: 12.08 km

Rate of inflow: 30.62 cubic metres per second
Total seepage (NDMA data): 0.66 cubic metres per second
Total seepage (Focus data): 0.90 cubic metres per second

Average rate of decrease of freeboard over the last ten days: 45.67 cm per day
Number of days to over-topping at current rate of freeboard loss: 62 days (see note below)

Estimated date of over-topping based on rate of loss of freeboard for last ten days (see note below): 19th June 2010

Important: The calculation of days to over-topping is subject to substantial uncertainty and must not be used for planning purposes. The rate at which the lake fills changes considerably with time according to variations in the rate of inflow, the rate of seepage, the rate of excavation of the channel, the shape of the valley etc. Under some circumstances, such as an earthquake, a landslide into the lake or rapid piping failure the dam could fail prior to overtopping.
