I am in the same boat. Replacing my old Corolla GLi (previous shape) and the options are Grande, Civic, Elantra and Sportage Alpha. Currently I am leaning towards Elantra for the following reasons:
- Instant delivery, big big plus. Used Grandes are selling higher than invoice prices which is a shame for a 6 year old model, because new ones are not available.
- 2.0L/154 HP. Although I havent test driven the Elantra I'm hoping it is more responsive than Civic/Grande.
- Interior build quality appeared pretty decent to me, rear space is quite good, ISOFIX for child seats, instrument cluster looks very modern, OEM infotainment with apple carplay/android is excellent, good quality Bluetooth etc. I don't like the infotainment for Grande and Civic infotainment is total kachra. Can never use Bluetooth for calling.
- Automatic 6-way driving seat including lumbar support is definitely best in class. The passenger seat has height adjustment which you don't normally seen in cars.
Now the cons, some of which I can live with but others that make me double minded:
- Quick delivery time.. Does it mean the car has flopped and not selling well enough? Will Nishat abandon the Elantra a year later or so? How will resale be affected, keeping in mind that I will want to sell and upgrade again in 3 years time.
- Tyres are now General, annoying but I can get them changed.
- Seats were comfortable generally but just felt a bit hard compared to my current Corolla. Maybe they will break in with time.
- Little things like: child lock switch in door can't be switched with hand, you need to poke in a screwdriver which is inconvenient. The hood doesn't have insulation sheet inside, Civic/Grande do. Does that affect cabin noise? How does cabin noise compare with Grande and Civic or Sportage? I want the quietest car because I have a lot of motorway travel.
My other choice is Sportage Alpha, but I have my own concerns with that, starting from prolonged delivery (3 months) to lack of safety features like traction control, VSC which I think are important for a crossover. On the plus side Sportage provides flexibility in boot space for travelling, this is quite convenient for me as I need to travel, carry stuff like pushchair etc., and also the infotainment system is OEM like Elantra's.
