I wana buy an suv under 16 lakh, are pajeros still reliable?

I dont have any experience of keeping 4x4 but now I feel that I should sell my coure 2007 and cultus 2010 model and get a pajero 7 seater with sun roof. I have a mitsubishi lancer 2004 model as well and its a darling car and becos of tat I have fallen in love with mitsubishi. I wana travel to hilly areas more often and that is why Im looking for a 7 seater. Many of my friends are saying buying an old suv will draw my time in workshops more and more. How about buying Daihatsu terios 4x4? One of my friends suggested me to forget old 4x4 and instead buy a new honda city.... Im little confused between suggestions and my choice...... Please guide me I shall be obliged. regards

All depends on what you wanna do. For normal hilly areas a car will do just fine even if you want to go to places like khunjerab, deosai, etc..

If you want to do off roading then you must go with a 4x4. Still there are highly maintained and well kept pajeros around.

You can look for a Surf or a Prado as well in this budget.

How to look for a trouble free vehicle I have no experience in SUV, mechanic advice is sufficient in this regard or not? How much is the maintenance cost, some friends of mine are saying that SUV will be a white elephant for me and my new friends will be mechanics only.

I will suggest u to stay away from pajeros.
U can get a gud toyota surf in this price
Parts are easily available.

infact you can find better condition pajeros because the people who got them imported rarely used them as a truck for odd jobs. Surf is in no comparison to a pajero, its a Hilux, no tall body, awkward sitting posture , poor ride comfort.
I have both and I have driven both around Pakistan. The only edge a toyota has is that if it breaks you can easily repair it, other than that Pajero is "love", you sit on the Weight adaptable seat on Pajero and the story finishes

I will suggest you go for Surf. If you want to keep it for long term then best option is 70 series landcruiser prado. Its a bit hard to find a keeper but its very relable. Maintained very easily, spares and mechanics are available everywhere. Don't buy altered engine version. I own a 1988 landruiser and I am in love with it.

Hi @hisam.jamal. roughly what would be a cost for this 1988 LC;
1) oil changes &
2) and body parts - suspension, engine with gear box. Lights grils etc. etc.New & after market.

Asking coz you personally have it in hand & assuming its well maintained.

Also share pictures if possible.

Its simple, look at the owner as well as the vehicle, if the owner is one of sound knowledge and the vehicle drives and looks flawless, its most probably going to be trouble free

Unfortunately Mitsubishi Pajero SUV segment is not comparable with Toyota in terms of Reliability although there is no match of their comfort.
In 80s and 90s Pajero was considered as status symbol but they lost charm after Prado took their market place because of its ruggedness,reliability and simple engine mechanics

Based on my personal experience and feedback from seniors regarding pajero i must say one of the reason it was not successful because of its engine and Ac performance in hot summer,secondly our local mechanic never completely understood how to fix issues with its engine and most of them are being swapped with Toyota 1KZ series.
e.g 3.5 GDI engine was technically advanced with complex wiring.

I also wont recommend Toyota surf because in tht range u will get 20 years old vehicle.
Daihatsu terios 4x4 is wise option but its wont be less than 1.8 million.

Ideal choice for you would be Toyota Rush, If u can raise ur budget till 2.1 u might get slightly used BRV

Pajeros are as reliable as Toyota,s infact some suspension components are twice as rugged as a Toyota and they also do not have that dashboard rattling issue, I have taken both to extreme ends and found out that Pajeros are super comfy whereas toyota is not, Toyota edge is that working on it in case something goes bad is a lot easier otherwise for touring and site seeing, nothing beats a pajero.
AC of pajero is equally good, I have found no problem in it.
I have a 3 door MK2 Petrol 3000cc and a 1999 1KZ-TE Surf so can compare and comment.
Rush etc are just cars on bigger wheels, no ladder frame. They will break apart during extreme bashing
