Importing european cars

Salaam,

I live in The Netherlands and want to import some european cars into Pakistan for the purpose of selling it once they arrive there.

Problem is that the FBR website is very vague when it comes to european cars, can anyone tell me how to calculate import duties of european cars?

I am talking about luxury models of MB, BMW, Audi max 2/3 years old.

Wa Alaikum Salam.

Sir I would sincerely suggest to let go of your this plan.

1. First, Pakistan is not a good market for European or even US brands. Japanese brand, and in that too, specific brands work here. To name a few: Toyota, Daihatsu, Honda, Suzuki, and Nissan (up to a certain extent), etc.

2. The custom duty depends on engine cc, and Hybrid / non-Hybrid factor, but this hybrid factor doesn't apply on 660, 1000 cc cars. As far as I know, it starts from at least 1500 cc, like Toyota Aqua, etc.

As far as FBR or its policies are concerned, If you are an overseas Pakistani, then as far as I know, you can bring car here from any country (except India and Israel).

Bringing car from Netherlands is not an issue, and car can be brought via transfer of residence of personal baggage schemes. I think, rules for gift scheme are different.

you missed his point, he wants to send cars from there to sell here, as a business, not for his utility.

Problem is, it will take sufficient time to reach here, and will cost you much.

Custom duty would be same for a Japanese or European car, as it depends on engine cc.

MB Has good market here, but BMW, and especially Audi, have min.

I wouldn't advice you to go ahead with this unless you have a custom clearing agent on call, because things here don't work as smoothly as they do in netherlands.
Another thing is that market for such cars is quite low and it will take you months to sell a single unit, so it won't make much economic sense.
Thirdly, the duty structure for these vehicles is very weird, in the last government, i was interested in bringing in a s500 from england, went through quite a bit of trouble and got in touch with a high official in the customs, he said that any such vehicle that is being brought in, Shahnawaz pvt ltd decides how much tax is viable for it, and 9 times out of ten, that is the tax we ask the owner to pay for clearance.

Right, but I have mentioned in the first point in the first post, that Pakistan is not good market for European or US Brands. The context was the same.

For personal use, it may be fine, but when it comes to sale here to earn profits, as he intends to, then he might not earn expected profits, and considering current worldwide situation, not a good idea.

Still, my opinion. Others can of course disagree, and guide him with alternative options.

I guess the car maffia is doing its thing there in Pakistan. Companies like Dewan and Shahnawaz have a massive influence on customs etc.

It is a shame PM is not doing anything about this, of he would remove certain duties and influences from certain companies 25% of Pakistan's vehicles would be replaced by much better equipped and cleaner vehicles within in the first year itself I guess.

I also have a transport company here and we use trucks (450 HP+) that can move massive amounts of (refrigerated/frozen) goods at a time, 20 to 25 tons per trailer. I have inquired for information about the import of these heavy duty trucks and trailers but no one from FBR is responding and no one from the Pakistan embassy here. Corruption is killing us.

Based on answers on this topic and answers I got outside of this forum I think I am going to try to do something with electric vehicles as there is no duty.

What do you guys think about the electric car market in Pakistan at the moment (I want offer them as cheap as possible).

Completely electric cars? They can work for local utilities, that too only in big cities as electricity is still a luxury in the rural areas. At present, it all depends on the price.
But market wise, not many will look at it enthusiastically, I will give you an example.
A person in Lahore, purchased a tesla instead of a new s class, PakWheels did an owners review. During the conclusion, the host said, you spent so much money and you can't do a round trip from Lahore to isb in one day....

Valid point, I guess when there will be enough charging facilities another car maffia will take over and we will be looking at high duties again.

Someone has to stand up to this, cars manufactured for Pakistan are of really poor quality.

the import of used / new trucks/ pullers is same as for every vehicle.
1. Money Trail as proof of purchase
2. NICOP of an expat working living abroad with dual nationality or residence visa.
3. Passport Copy so to verify legitimacy of stay abroad.
4. KIN / SIBLING have evidence of money transfer from abroad.

There are over 1200 used Volvo diesel tractors landed into Pakistan in past 5 years.

with due respect sir , go petrol pumps are taking measures to install charging spots and I heared they have installed them at few pumps it will be fruitful for electric car owners

Also read on the charging time, and then factor in the load shedding and cheap silver wire. Put 2 and 2 together, we won't see mainstream electric cars for atleast 5 years

5 years atleast, I didn't want to argue, 5 years appeared to had done the trick realistically I agree with you, its gonna take quite a painfully long time before a common man friendly consumer electric vehicle becomes common on our roads.

what is the duty on trailers

only pullers are importable. floating axle boxes / frames can be fabricated locally.

Hino, Nissan Isuzu Renault Volvo & Scania have the presence and assembling license in Pakistan so they have licence to import new units
