NEW DELHI: After announcing a $500-million plan to enter the Indian small car market by 2010, US auto major Ford on Tuesday said it aims to supply vehicles to the Indian defence sector.
The company, which launched a new version of its sports utility vehicle Endeavour powered by a 3 litre turbo diesel engine, is considering the military version of the vehicle for Indian defence use.
"We do have military version of the Endeavour in different countries and bringing it into India should not be an issue to us," Ford India Vice-President Marketing and Sales Scott McCormack said.
It all depends on the specifications and requirements by the Indian military. Talks are going on now, he added.
The new four-wheel drive Endeavour has been priced at Rs 17.32 lakh. The company has so far sold nearly 10,000 Endeavours in India since its first launch in 2003.
Ford had recently announced it would be investing $500 million to enter the Indian small car market by 2010, ramping up production capacity to 2 lakh units a year from current 1 lakh and also setting up an engine manufacturing unit.
McCormack said the engine plant would have a capacity of 2.5 lakh engines a year and the company could utilise the facility for global exports.
It currently sources engines from GP-CK Birla group company AVTEC. Last year, the company sold nearly 40,000 units of vehicles in the Indian market. He, however, declined to give an estimate of the expected sales this year.
He said the company was looking forward to the upcoming Budget and hoped that the government would do away with the differential excise and non-uniform taxation system of automobiles. "Also, we would like the government to bring down the import duty on capital goods," he added.
