Info about CVT

Dear All, Assalam o Alaikum. I wanted to know one thing if someone can confirm, as I don't have much knowledge about Automatics. What is a CVT and is Corolla GLI A/T 1.6 is a CVT Transmission?

CVT is Continuously Variable Transmission. Unlike Conventional Automatics, in CVT you don’t feel any jerks because by definition it has an infinite number of gears. No gear changing sensations, seamless transmission. Toyota has programmed their CVT to simulate 7 gears, to give the feel of normal driving experience, otherwise conventional CVTs are quite boring to drive. Programmed CVTs give normal automatics like engine revving sound but still no jerks while simulated gear shifting.

GLi comes in 1.3 AT
Altis comes in 1.6 AT
Altis Grande and Cruisetronic comes in 1.8 CVT.

CVT is better than conventional AT these days IMO

Thanks Nifiii. I have also heard some downside of CVTs as well like they have a slight lag in pickup while standing also lacks the power if there are 4-5 passengers. Is that true?

only in 1.0 liter and below engines. 1.8 grande or civic doesn't lag.

As said by Usman, no problem in 1.8 or even 1.5 litre engines.
One of the downside is that if CVT isn’t maintained properly like CVT oil change, heat up etc then it can cause trouble. If not abused it should be trouble free for atleast 200k kms or even more.

No. the thing that not many people know is, that cvts unlike conventional automatics are not to be driven in D all the time, If you switch at the appropriate times to S, you won't feel any lag

but my MOCA / DAYZ / HIJET / MINICA does not have S mode for the transmission what shall I do? please advise?

All cvts have an S mode. some instead of the overdrive button and some in the same line as PRNDSB
and if it doesn't, it probably has another gear outside of D.
Hybrids usually don't have an S, thats cause they don't need one, no idea how your these cars don't have it

I want to ask one thing..to change gear from D-S car should we stop and we change the gear or we could do it while the car is travelling at high speed ?

I have an understanding (may be i am wrong if so, please correct me), S Gear = Eco Idle Off. if S is missing from Gear Options.

Regarding changing gear from D to S or S to D, its not needed to stop

Can be shifted to d3 if speed is not more than the 3 gear limit.
For example in auto 4 speed corolla which is 160-180 km/h in 3rd gear.

That PRNDSB or PRNDB Mostly in small cars 660cc eco idle. Where you can interchange D-S or D-B but S is mostly for instant acceleration not letting the rpm down.
B is for engine braking going downhill.

Its 7-speed cvt not like a traditional one.
There are fake shifts which can be changed in M mode or with paddle shifters.

1.6 comes in 4 speed automatic.
1.8 comes in CVT.
I prefer CVT as it has very smooth drive.
