Buy a good maintained vehicle. It still might require some money when you buy it ( just to bring it to your taste and level ) but these vehicles dont need regular maintenance and they dont break that easily if you maintain them properly. Regular oil/filters change and they are good to go.
And if it requires some work initially, get it done from proper workshop who know these 4x4s. If your previous mechanic have no experience of these just don't go to them thinking you can trust them.
I had a toyota 80 series which was my first suv. That was a bad buy because i had no idea about diesel engines and i had to spend 300k ( back in 2016 ) on it to bring it to life. But i drove it for 1.5years everyday and except for oil change there was nothing it required later. It went to north only once. Later I bought a prado but this time i spent around 1.5-2lacs extra when buying it. Kept it again for 1.5years and 0 work done on it except brake pads changed in the start and regular oil maintenance.
Just be careful. Get vehicle inspected by well know workshop or some expert of 4x4s. Suggestion is make sure its not a body change and avoid auction and amnesty vehicles ( they are mostly body change ). Some say body change is legal of same shape and some say its still illegal. So for mental satisfaction i always avoided body change suv.
