A while ago I was looking into reports of AC explosions. My conclusion from reading technical data and talking with local AC installers was its mainly due to poor training and jugaar baazi of installers in our region.
For example, if you don't properly purge out refrigerant lines using Nitrogen gas OR vacuum them - both of which get rid of flammable oxygen gas from open refrigerant lines, then its a recipe for disaster because than a flammable gas like R32 will mix with oxygen present in the lines - significantly increasing chances of explosion from a nearby source of ignition (e.g. faulty compressor, cigarette etc).
Each time a repair needs to done. Follow these simple rules and insist even if ustaad says "sir hum rooz aisay AC pe kaam kertay, aap tension na lain"
- For leak testing, Always use Nitrogen gas. Some ustaad fill up refrigerant lines with Oxygen (air) which is a huge mistake!
- When filling gas or releasing gas from existing Condensor. Always vacuum for 20 mins using a proper vacuum pump (not refrigerator compressor that ustaads lug around with them)
- Never Top up gas in an Inverter AC. There is a lot of science behind it, but basically, remove all existing gas, vacuum and then re-fill by Weight - never by PSI !!!
