The reliability is kinda same
Genuine parts prices are also close
For personal use on good roads both cost almost same.
I guess the myth is perpetrated by those using corolla on rough roads or running a rent a car business because on corolla a suspension rebuild at 1/3rd the cost of original parts would last them the same 3-4 years as one with original parts. They don't care how the car handles at high speeds. All they care about is that suspension shouldn't make weird sounds and should go over potholes softly.
A Honda throws tantrums with this kinda usage, with non genuine parts it doesn't handle like a Honda should. Noises don't disappear, handling isn't great. So for rough use long term, a honda is significantly expensive. Owner gets work done with cheaper parts, doesn't like how it drives, gets the work done again after a few thousand KM with genuine parts so bearing labor cost twice. You get the idea.
I recently got 2 corolla's suspension work done. The Z links replaced on the 2002 2D saloon + ball joints + a bit T&C costed me about 25k but I drive that 2D saloon on my daily & I like tight handling and spent properly on it.
On the other hand the grande 2016 that will be driven by a driver in city on a route where max 40-60kph is possible on a good day for next 2-3 years, got it's steering rack repaired for about 5k. A good kabuli steering rack would cost about 30k, chinese one around 20k and genuine one about a 100k. So there u go, I got it running for next few years at 1/20th of the cost of a new steering rack. When I bring that vehicle to my daily usage I'll replace the rack + any other parts. The shock absorbers are a bit weak as well what local mechanics like to call 85 percent health so those will be replaced as well with KYBs.
