Islamabad Highway from Rawat to Koral Chowk to be made 10 lanes wide



Tuesday, May 20, 2014 - Islamabad?To accommodate the increasing pressure of traffic, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to expand Islamabad Highway from Rawat to Koral Chowk to 10 lanes.

The Planning wing of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has issued the layout plan and cross-section of the project and now tenders would be invited for the construction work.

However, it is still unclear that whether the road will be constructed under Roads Department of the civic authority or the new company of CDA which has been awarded the right of way of Islamabad Highway.

The highway from Faizabad to Koral chowk is already of 10 lanes and now the width will be extended to Rawat as long queues of light and heavy traffic are seen throughout the day particularly during morning and evening hours. Similarly, the road from Zero Point to Faizabad will also be widened to 10 lanes, while another loop will be added in Faizabad Interchange.

It is to be mentioned here that traffic pressure on Islamabad High-way has significantly increased as residents of Korang Town, Pakistan Town, Behria Town, Media Town, Judicial Colony, DoctorsTown, PWD Housing Scheme, National Police Foundation Scheme, and Ghouri Town use the road. The residents have appealed to the government to start the project on priority basis.

CDA doesn't have any funds to complete the Kashmir Highway project during the last 4 or 5 years, but still have the guts to start new projects without arranging for the funding and in the end its the public that suffers from the prolong construction of such projects.

Great news. Hope they do it quickly. Currently the road is so bad that I've changed two cars as suspension is ruined in a couple if years. I drive on it daily.

I think the issue in Pindi ISB is not the width of the road but the traffic. Pathetic drivers in twin cities. Spread all over the lanes and no concept of correct lanes.

Mass transportation like Metro Railways is the only solution to the problem. Even 10 Lanes may choke in near future if no checks are made on the number of vehicles

I have lived all my life in Lahore and have also lived in Faisalabad. Pindi's traffic is very similar to Faislabad's although Faisalabad's traffic is the worst.

Whenever I travel from Lahore to Pindi, I consciously remind myself that I will now be dealing with Pindi taxi drivers.

First of all they should build underpasses or fly-overs at I-8 chowk, Sohan, Khanna Pul, Koral Chowk, Judicial Colony, Korang Town+PWD+Soan Gardens, DHA. It will also ease the flow of traffic.

The police check post at Faizabad should be designed for maximum flow of traffic and effective monitoring of inbound vehicles. This check point is major cause of traffic congestion when u enter Islamabad.

Koran Town already take initiative build underpass which will be connected to ISB High Way ... Dont know when but hope for the best...

If other Societies Specially PWD build Under pass for incoming traffic it will be best for NPF,PWD,Bahira,Media & Doc Town....

this is not going to be an easy project
specially the expansion on bridge points.
the bridges are very high up the ground

The project started with a lot of fanfare but after the initial frenzy has become stagnant since last couple of years. It is especially unfortunate that the maj work of preparing underpass by re-routing Main railway line has been completed but now has been caught somewhere in the red tape or financing issue.
