Islamabad to Khewra Salt Mines

Hi PWers,

I am planning a visit from Islamabad to Khewra Salt Mine with family in Mid July. Can anyone tell me how are the road conditions and the best route to take? Google Maps is suggesting route via M2.

The Best Route is from M-2, take exit from Lillah Interchange and opt Lillah - Pind Dadan Khan Road after exiting from Lillah Interchange to the left.... The Road condition is quite acceptable (only noisy Road), some Pot Holes are still present but all the way carpeted road from interchange till Khewra Salt Range.

went to Khewra Salt Mines in start of May this year..
as soon as you get off M2, road is nonexistent .. they've unpaved all the road going through Pind Dadan Khan and Jhelum area... and car couldn't go above speed of 20-30 km max... and had to redo suspension work when i got back home ...

so unless you have a off roading machine , keep in mind the bumpy and trashy ride of around 2 - 3 hours when you get off the motorway : )

otherwise, salt mine itself was a pleasant site to visit 7/10 .. but road was 1/10 : (

Don't even think about it. From M2 till Salt Mines is a nightmare. You will destroy your car

If you leave the motorway at Kallar Kahar interchange, then Chao Saidan Shah road is acceptable. Katas Raj Temple is on that way.
If you leave M2 at Lillah interchange, then don't even think to travel to Khewra Salt Mines. That way is no existent Road. Will take you 2 hours to travel that 20km patch.
Go from Kallar Kahar interchange and return from that way too.

🏻The best part of the road from Lillah interchange to Khewra Salt Mines is this one as shown in the picture, imagine the worst part.

Hire a rent a car and save your cars suspension. I hired a Corolla to go to salt mines in 2019, as I was visiting from karachi and had no other option

Actually I am going by road from Karachi to Isb and back. Any other spots worth seeing on the way without ruining the car?

Sorry Bro, I have travelled some 4-5 years back so apologies don't know about the current road conditions. While going through the comments from recent travelers I feel ashamed on my suggestion...

You can visit the following archeological sites near Bahawalpur:
* Derawar Fort.
* Noor Mahal.
* Darbar Mahal.
* Gulzar Mahal.
* Abbasi Mosque.

Other then that you can also visit Kallar Kahar Lake near Kallar Kahar motorway exit. But this is once in a life spot.

@roboxx can you give any rough idea about road from Kalar Kahar interchange. Actually i am very senstive and posessive for my car so want to know how good / bad it is from Kalar Kahar.
