Pak ready to vroom with Tata's Jaguar

MUMBAI: It is one of the many ironies of the Tata-Jaguar deal that the company being taken over does not even have a single dealership in the country of the company that is taking them over. Unlike in the country next door, where Premium Motors of Pakistan has just signed on to represent Jaguar and its sister company Land Rover, both of them now owned by Tata Motors. Land Rover has an Indian dealer, but Jaguar does not.
If Asim Baksh, CEO of Premium Motors, is discomfited at finding himself in what must be a rather rare position of being an official distributor for an ultimately Indian-owned product in Pakistan, he doesn’t show it when we call him in Lahore. “It’s no problem at all,” he says positively.
“It would only be a problem if the products were made in India.” He feels that as long as Tata keeps Jaguar and Land Rover separate and continues supplying from abroad, it won’t be an issue. “My understanding is that the deal is more to transfer technology from Jaguar and Land Rover for Tata’s Indian plans.”
Nor does he agree with the view of some of Jaguar’s American distributors that Indian ownership will dilute the premium image of the brand. “As long as Tata doesn’t take its eye off the ball, and continues to invest in Jaguar as a premium sports car brand and Land Rover as a premium SUV brand, there should be no problem.” Mr Baksh, it should be noted, is no novice when it comes to luxury. His company also represents a host of Italian brands in Pakistan like Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci. His entry in automobiles was an extension of this luxury specialisation, tying up with Bentley as well as Jaguar and Land Rover.
Mr Baksh feels the prospect in Pakistan for these luxury brands is excellent. “This is a growing economy and there’s a lot of demand,” he says. The company has already started selling Land Rovers from its one showroom in Lahore and it is expecting its first deliveries of Jaguar in June. Mr Baksh tells us that they plan to start opening new showrooms rapidly, first in Karachi and Islamabad, and then second-line cities like Faridabad. “In the next 24-36 months, we will be expanding rapidly,” he says. We have no idea what Tata Motors feels, but their representative there is certainly ready to roll.
