The Edhi Foundation, a well-known non-profit organization in Pakistan, has recently released its annual report for the year 2022, and the statistics about Karachi are shocking! According to the report, hundreds of people lost their lives or were injured in traffic accidents in the city.
In the past year, approximately 780 people died in traffic accidents in Karachi, while 9,725 others were injured. These numbers are both alarming and heartbreaking, as they represent a significant loss of life and suffering for both individuals and their families. They also reflect the shortcomings of Karachi's traffic laws regulation.
Reasons of Accidents
But what is causing these accidents in Karachi? Well, one of the main causes is the lack of proper infrastructure and safety measures. Many roads in the city are poorly maintained, with potholes and other hazards posing a risk to drivers and pedestrians alike. In addition, there are often inadequate traffic control measures in place, such as traffic lights and signs, which can lead to confusion and accidents.
Another contributing factor is the lack of enforcement of traffic laws. Many drivers in Karachi do not follow the basic rules of the road, such as wearing seat belts, using turn signals, and respecting speed limits. This lack of compliance with traffic laws can lead to dangerous situations on the roads. Moreover, they are not penalized for breaking these laws either.
Unfortunately, the provincial government and law enforcement agencies (LEAs) have turned a blind eye to the challenges and issues affecting Pakistan’s largest city. The metropolis is afflicted with chaotic traffic, resulting in hundreds of residents' deaths.
It is deeply concerning that the provincial government and law enforcement agencies have not prioritized addressing the challenges and issues facing Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. The chaotic traffic in the metropolis has had deadly consequences, with hundreds of residents losing their lives. It is necessary that swift action is taken to address this problem and improve the safety of the roads in Karachi. Otherwise, the city will keep losing more innocent lives.
