Kawasaki GTO 110

Dear respected PW community,

Asalamualaykum.

My name is Stephen, and I'm writing from Karachi.

I recently acquired a 1989 Kawasaki 110, which I wish to restore back to its original state.

After a bit of research and YouTube recommendation, I visited Aurangzeb Market and Ranchore Line to inquire about parts and if any mechanic would work on the motorcycle. Unfortunately, they refused to give me any information or were extremely discouraging and told me "Iss Janaza ko bech do aur Honda 125 laylo." Or, "Parts aap ko Punjab se mil jayega."

Having said that, I now turn to the PakWheels community seeking advice and guidance. If any brother could guide me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

On a scale of 1-10

How good are you in mechanical repair? 1 being oil change, 10 being engine teardown and rebuild along with electrics?

Better to dispose of this project, you will end up spending a massive amount of money and still have a pile of scrap.

Dont buy projects if you are planning to be wallet holder only, such endeavors end up either broke, divorced, miserable or just painful.

If you are hell bent to get this done, then buy some tooling, service books etc, a worktable and start teardown to rebuild properly like the factory books tell you to.

Contact Nadeem Nabi (@basic) to get some pointers if you really want to move ahead with your project. I have a huge admiration for his work. Otherwise take @Xulfiqar advice.

In North Karachi, I managed to find someone who had experience with a slimmer Kawasaki project. He has given me a quote of 160,000 rupees with a two-month turnaround.

How will you be able to sign off on his work?

Lets say he has your cylinder barrel resleeved and the ports end up aimed wrong and have sharp edges too.

Your engine loses more than half of its torque with such shenanigans. Or what will he do if the rotary valve housing surface is messed up due to foreign object damage (very common)

I will suggest you to keep the bike with you but don't start the project. Read different threads on this forum regarding overhaul / restoration etc. then decide if you are willing and capable enough to do it properly.

After you decide, gather manuals. And put down notes about what are the main points to keep in mind. Then do this kind of projects. Else you will end up like sir @Xulfiqar has said.

Don't give it to someone and believe that he will do it up to the mark. It is best possible way to burn you money and feelings with your own hand.

Thank you for your suggestion.

After doing some study on the restoration process, I discussed my plans for my motorcycle with some gentlemen at Kawasaki (Kuwait), and they volunteered to assist me.

Meanwhile, I've made the decision to educate myself a little bit more about overhauling, and I'll try to periodically update this page with the results.

Mr. Shahabuddin (mechanic) will examine the motorcycle tomorrow. Since I purchased this bike, this will be the first inspection.

Now, I won't be leaving this motorcycle up to the mercy of any mechanic, but after having it evaluated by two or three auto mechanics, I'm interested to know what recommendations they would have for a newbie such as myself.

Ive seen it over and over again, but if you want to become a statistic then most welcome!

Small Q abt overhaul

Do you know the chrome process used on factory parts like mudguards and exhaust? And what do you expect from restore process in terms of materials, finish, cost and expected life of replated parts?

No, sir. As I previously mentioned, I have almost no expertise constructing motorcycles, but I'll give it a shot anyhow, and even if I fail, I'll have gained some knowledge.

I've heeded your advice, brother, to start the disassembly process and get the necessary tools, repair manuals, and a worktable in order to rebuild correctly.

Ok then, show it to mechanic.

Buy a tool kit, and take your bike to home and disassemble it completely. Check what parts are its own and what are just installed. Buy the required parts plan it all out.

You will learn quite a lot.

And will know what to buy. After that you should have the mechanic involved in overhaul etc.
