Keeping Luggage Dry In Pick Up Truck

Hello everyone,

I own an ISUZU D-Max and planning a camping trip with family. I am curious how everyone with a pickup truck keeps their luggage dry during travels in the rainy season.

Any tips, suggestions, and personal experience is welcome. Also, please do share pictures as they would be helpful. I don't want to reinvent the wheel; just trying to copy whatever the experience people in this forum are already doing

I have the market available tri fold lid (chinese i believe) which costed me 50k. It does not fully stop water from entering the trunk area. They said its 95% waterproof when i asked about it. In short its not conpletely waterproof. the water does get in and additional protection like using a waterproof sheet over luggage (found cheap) will be needed. To me It's good for privacy and keeping luggage hidden from the eyes of thieves etc.It does not lock so you have to take valuable luggage with you. One can always tie luggage and put a chain with lock. Can also improve aerodynamics but if you want complete waterproofing then those covers start from 1lack onwards from companies ike aeroklass etc.
I'd recommend to go with something like https://www.autostore.pk/shop/car-accessories/aeroklas-tonneau-cover-bed-cover/ for waterproofing. They are a bit bulky looking but one piece is the way to go. I have attached pictures of my truck lid and anchoring system for reference. Hopefully this helps.

P.S. I had to replace the original 3 fold lid i bought replaced, with hassle to a new one as it was faulty and coming apart. Do check it before you pay and before they drill holes. Make no mistake they will drill holes into the metal under the plastic cladding and will lie all day that it's only the plastic. Lying is their second nature.

Also this tri fold lid can be taken off in 5 mins so you can take it off when needed and put taller stuff in there. there are advantages and disadvantages.

I love Revo.. really love to have that. But this open space without water proof cover was my one and only one concern. As every thing open no option availible went to many aftermarket solutions but non seemed viable and effective. These covering lids some are even automatic good in dry season but doesn't work in rainy season. Also another problem you have to adjust luggage horizontally to adjust within height limit so in fact it reduced storage place. In end I went for Fortuner 2022 Diesel.My suggestion to Toyota Indus is to sell water proof lid as accessory as any one if wants can install that I am pretty sure a lot of people will buy that.

If you're planning to keep the bed covered year round then trifold with a lock is the only option. If it's just for occasional camping trips get a waterproof canopy. It will cost less & there won't be any space compromise.

My friend bought a similar thing from Aliexpress in 2018 & is very happy with it. Someone can surely custom stitch it in Pakistan too. Try visiting some tarpaal & curtain shops.

Trucks have their quirks. That being said this is my first and I love it. Less complicated more rugged and great power. I have put things in the trunk that i would never put in an SUV. It has its advantages as well.

I also saw many products online while researching but unfortunately when you visit market the choices are kind of limited and everyone has the same stuff. This is good and bad. Everything is imported so costs a lot but it can be replaced if there is fault. If there is only one then if it has faults it cannot be replaced. Also vendors have to sell all the pieces as new imports are banned/ limited and there is no warranty that comes internationally with them. Everything is check warranty. also importing such an item will be expensive now and will cost the same as the market available products. Many people have stopped using Aliexpress etc as large taxes are being imposed on imported stuff. Much of the local market sources stuff from abroad via private channels or in black.

I agree, importing this stuff now will be hard & won't make much sense financially. Getting it custom stitched is the only viable option now.

I am not a pro for sure but what I did worked like ace as we took rain showers pretty good in kaghan valley but nothing was soaked.. we had a picnic matterss kind of a water proof one and it was put on all lugauge like this and it works superb doc sab using the nivara own dust cover like this and it works perfect

and cover it with this net mesh to hold it and keep it down

Thank you for sharing this, I’ll have to get it stitched but I’ll serve the purpose better as I won’t be limited for the storage space in this option

This discussion has surely given me a lot of ideas. I am now thinking that i already have a hard base so i will just cover it with a waterproof sheet over hanging from all sides and tying it with ropes going over and under the rear bed. water will go over it and wont enter the trunk.

Every pickup truck should have 3 or 4 ratchet straps to tie down your cargo.

For waterproofing, the trifold is nice but thieves can slice it open. The hard top cover like boot of car is a nice option too. But limits what you can drop in the bed.

Toolbox is a nice option for small stuff along with headache rack and a tarp along with some oldschool scout training on how to tie cargo for larger stuff.

That's nice advice. I personally do not like trifold and hard top options as they seriously limit the amount of luggage you can put in the bed and that is a deal-breaker for me.

For this trip, I am going with the simple "tarpal" and ratchet straps option as there's a lot of luggage I have to put in.

@itsforoj better check from NHMP and hotels at your planned stop overs. Heavy rains, flooding land slides and paved highway wash out are reported from Up north. Start the journey with constant weather & road conditions update along the route. Stay safe drive safe.
