Key doesn't turn ignition in passo 2004

Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a passo 2004, it's my first japanese car so I'm not that experienced, and would really appreciate help and guidance from all of you experienced people.

The problem I'm facing is the key goes in to the ignition fine but it the ignition doesn't turn i.e I try and turn it to start the car but it's stuck and moving it in and out and back and forward after a minute or two it moves forward and works, but after a continuous struggle for two minutes.

I've checked the stearing wheel is unlocked and the car is set to Park Mode and it should be in Park Mode as the key doesn't come out in other modes.

Please guide me what to do? where can I get it checked and fixed? I live in ISB any locksmith or auto electrician that I should go to and what's the next step.

WD-40 is not a good suggestion at all, meanwhile op just change the batteries in the key and you should be good to go, there should be two batteries if I am not wrong as jdm spec cars have an immobilizer, o was facing a similar issue on my Prius. If that doesn't work than you should try oil or anything

Thanks for the info, yup I already dipped it in oil and that didn't solve the problem, I got your point about the parking mode.

OK so I'm a little new Japanese cars, I looked at the manual and some pictures so I have what's called the Master Key it has some black plastic piece at the top, but there is no place for batteries in it, so I'm assuming you're referring to the remote and I don't have that.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

The plastic part has an immobilizer in it, in almost all jdm cars, I'm not sure if yours has it. If you are from islo or Rawalpindi area I can tell you a shop

Go to saddar Rawalpindi, there is a famous karhai shop, by the name "" jahangir karhai"" ask anyone there about a Japanese car chaabi Wala, he is well known in the area, and very capable as he was able to make a new key fob... (Well program it) for a second generation prius and that's not easy. Sorry I don't remember too many details, but this is how I found him , by someone's reference, in a moment of chaos when I had no key and a locked car. I had lost mine

By the sounds of your problem it is a ignition barrel problem. The barrel needs repairing or a worse case scenario replacing. You wont know till the auto locksmith strips down the lock. If your still stuck give us a shout we can help you. Based I-9.

Can also be a case of immobilizer battery dying

First check if your car is equipped with Immobilizer or not.
Im not sure about Passo 2004 model, but 2007 model onwards have a Push(Rotate) button Start if they have Immobilizer.
So most probably your car does not have any immobilizer in it.

Now there are two possible reasons for your problem.

1- Your Car Main Battery is weak, these japanese cars do not start ignition if battery power is below certain point. You can verify it by observing the dashboard meter, when you try to ignite the car if meter lights go dim, then its for sure a Battery problem.
If lights do not go dim or fade, then battery is probably fine.

2- Your Ignition Switch cylinder is faulty (wore out) and needs service, when you turn the key, it actually does not turn the switch of ignition to ON/Start that may be the reason.
