not gonna this time,, the market is different now, people are more fed up with suzuki and the existing players than ever before, also the demand for imported cars is ever increasing, there are other factors as well, decision makers also are more aware and prepared this time around than before,, its just the matter of time of time that these brands will be dominating the market in a year or two, and you wont be hearing from japanese,, take note,, I said it...

It is very difficult and an uphill task to dethrone established automakers in any country. What newcomers need is protection from the govt, in the form of tax cuts and incentives etc and then the product will have to speak for itself. If Kia had launched the Picanto instead of the Carnival if even at a the new Cultus pricepoint then they could have had a fighting chance. Now they are DOA and would grudgingly admit if cornered, i'm sure of it.

Govt protection leads to useless idiocy. Kia is not a pakistani brand - why should govt of pk give any protection.

Imagine this.
They sell u cars cheap with fatal flaws and useless aftersales support. And because they are protected. No one can touch them.

Why should any manufacturer require any protection. Why not simple honest hardwork and support their products.

If a product is good and has support. It needs no protection or endorsement.

In any oligopoly like the auto industry of pakistan, you need to offer incentives to new entrants in order to establish a level playing field for them. The reason 12+ automakers are setting up assembly plants is because of the incentives they're offered in new autopolicy, otherwise no one will even bother. How many automakers exactly bothered having a serious attempt at Pak market before the auto policy? Answer is none except FAW which was going successful in truck business already.

For the layman here's an easy understandable example:
An automaker who's manufacturing in the country for last 30 years has a strong vendor base, has invested continuously for these years in localisation. In comparison if someone new comes in they can't initially have that type of localisation, they'll import cbu's then the kits to assemble vehicles locally in order to test their product in the new market, if it works they'll localise and if it doesn't they won't. In order to import those kits they need tax cuts otherwise the product will be more expensive than the localised one of the existing competitor.

Explain us why should any automaker want to start an assembly line in pk, when the market is pin sized and the political and economic situation is like looking into a gutter.

Its been 30yrs and not one single part has been seen in the brands global catalog that is sourced from Pakistan, All we are seeing is dollars being paid to the brand owners for importing stuff for assembly.

Any mechanical item is sold by its performance and sales support. E.g. its useless to buy a carrier branded ac in Pakistan because its basic replacement parts like panel module is not sold in pk.

Now speaking of this van, the only way it will be a success is when scrappies sell,its parts. Because average pk car buyer is too poor to even buy genuine tune up parts, and love worn out and obsolete parts. For such model u donnt need a brand owner, just import them as gray used and expect owner to trash it in 4 years.

You can read my reply of the other brand vans that were sold, want to share why don't we see them around? Like the benz powered SsangYong, the benz mb100, the Hyundai grace etc..

How come this one will be different?

1. This van isn't the only thing that's going to be in their lineup, it's the only cbu model whereas others will be locally assembled.

2. The reason these automakers are coming is the future potential of Pakistani market and this region as a whole, we've 6th largest population in the world and only 10-14/1000 people own a car, see that potential? Our car market now has one of highest percentage growth rates in the world though you may see some slowing down in coming years because of non filers being barred from car purchase but it'll be back on track, I'm in no doubt.

3. There's finally some sort of hope for political stability in the country, 2 political govts have successfully completed their tenures for first time in country's history despite all type of hurdles like terrorism to dharnas and IA that'll continue.

4. Pakistani normal auto parts are exported to third world markets, paksuzuki has recently started exporting kits for the carry pickup to Suzuki Vietnam so the concept that Pakistani parts aren't used is wrong but they've not yet reached the standards of developed world markets as of yet and that'll take time, even parts from ASEAN struggle there.

5. As for economy we've to turn that around ourselves, our history is that of missed opportunities but today there's so much of educated youth in the country, there are educational institutes like lums,nust, pieas. We've to use opportunities like cpec to our advantage instead of letting others use us for their advantage only, it should be a fair game.

6. You mention 3 failed vans of 3 brands yet these all 3 brands are coming back, Ssangyong will be assembling SUVs with Dewan, hyundai has partnered with Nishat and the lineup is expected to include the van aswell, MB just signed a trilateral agreement with shahnawaz and nlc to assemble modern trucks in Pak, why? Because they realise there's potential in this market, it's not going to remain pin sized forever.

And btw more than 50-60% of most locally produced cars consist of locally produced parts, we don't produce advanced stuff like engines, suspension etc here locally because as of yet there isn't enough return to invest in that.

What market are you speaking of. The same market whose 70% has no access to clean drinking water?

I recall thailand was abt the same in age as pk when it came to exporting parts. Today honda. Nissan. Toyota and mazda lube filter units are thai made in global catalogs. Why cant i ever find a pakistani oil filter. Or a radiator or even plastic blow mould items?

It will take nearly 80% of the life of horseless carriage for pakistan into the future to actually make stuff which would then have been obsolete by decades. Lol.

Anyway. People in pk are simply starved for anything. They will eat mud if presented like pizza. Thats what i think is going to happen.

Not just being negative here. But the world has already seen it happen in pk. Brands show up, collect some $$$$ and pack up shop.

Pakistan first started manufacturing a 4 cylinder petrol engine in 1960's for its own indigenous SUV "Nishan jeep" in collaboration with Willis jeep and diesel engines were manufactured in collaboration with lister & Blackstone of England, some were also developed in collaboration with Skoda and the local brand was named skopak, but what happened? Mr Bhutto came and nationalised everything and stopped all these projects on vehicle development as car was apparently a bourgeoisie thing back then with not much to do with aam awam.

The point is that after that stupid nationalisation and destruction of all those companies under govt rule, Pakistani market lost the confidence of international investors. Only 3 manufacturers bothered to invest seriously but steadily, no automaker comes to Pak with foreign direct investment anymore, they all choose the option of foreign portfolio investment i.e sharing risk with a local partner, my point is that since political blunders like those and martial laws are now less likely to happen hence there's a chance we may move towards betterment, nothing wrong in having a measured amount of optimism :3 .

I dont want the finer details of what happened to a clone setup factory and how the beautiful political system of ours dismantled it, Its a useless argument because you have universities churning out mech engineers, you have trade schools, you have cottage industries that can work on such.

I have not seen any Kia Carnival on road in Lahore, Is it me who is missing it or there is no Kia Carnival in Lahore DHA & Gulberg ?

I have seen around 6-7 Carnival, saw two in silver colour yesterday on Motorway M2.
