Dear,

A good travel experiences shared. Well I am planning to explore the fearsome and scenic beauty of KKH in this summer. My target is to reach the base camp of the Killer mountain i.e @ fairy meadows Nanga Parbat and also shangrila resorts. I have few questions for you if you kindly respond to it, may make trip convenient.
1: Which car did you used for this travel, as i have Toyota RAV4, which is a full time 4WD and I am sure there will no problem for it on bumpy and bad roads.
2: Is there any road/street workshops/tyres shops etc or not, I have almost all sort of vehicle tools in my car but still wondering.
3: Preferred routes and hotels etc for stay.
4: Must to carry.
5:How much days atleast are required to explore the areas?
6: Any additional info may be welcomed. Thanks

same hotel we stayed in june 2011 and we paid 400 each room we took 2 rooms.

While searching for hotel, I turned towards left for Chilas city but relaized that I was wrong. Hotels are on the KKH and I should have driven straight. Turned back and settled at this hotel. Owner was asking for Rs. 1000. He claimed that attached bathroom has commode as well as indian flush. I instantly said "ok I will give you Rs. 1100 because tonight I will use commode and in the morning flush..... thx for added facility" Lolllllll!

Mehroo can go anywhere. My first car was Mehro of 1990s and I used to drive it to its max 127km/h on m2......though engine died without clocking 100k. But it was built strong. I am sure Mehro can still climb tough mountain tracks, its ground clearance is fine.....but I think its built quality is poor now. No offense to Mehro owners......in 2012 I wanted to buy Mehro again for said qualities but stepped down from the office of Suzuki dealer coz of poor material used.

Thanks bros. Rav 4 can easily make it on kkh. I carried 2 10 liter each cans of high octane as petrol pumps after besham are few and far away and that I am not confident about quality of fuel there.

Further you must carry air pump to inflate punctured radial tyre as a temporary relief. Puncture shops are very few and those too are prepared to cater to trucks etc. My punctured tyre was badly molested in front of my eyes at a tyre shop somewhere on kkh and I could not speak as I knew there was no second option. After a couple of months that young tyre deshaped in away that even puncture wala near my home was shocked.

RAV4 is more than enough for KKH. I have travelled on KKH and Skardu Road a number of times in my Suzuki Alto.
Yes, there are workshops and tyre shops but I have never experienced their services (Thanks to my fit as a fiddle ALTO). Also don't worry about petrol. Just don't forget to fill your vehicle's petrol tank in Besham and then in Chillas.
If you decide to stay in Besham then PTDC motel and Besham Contenantal Hotel are good choices. If you need to stay in Chillas, don't go inside the city. You will find some good hotels along KKH in Chillas. You can choose a hotel depending on your pocket.
For Fairy meadows you have to leave KKH from Raikot bridge (some 2-hour drive from Chillas).
From Raikot bridge to Jaglot, road is excellent. (30-minute drive)
For Shangrila Resorts Skardu, you will leave KKH 5 km after Jaglot town (Fill your vehicle's petrol tank in Jaglot. Shell, Total and Caltex petrol pumps are at the end of the town) and will take Skardu road (five-and-a-half-hour drive). Shangrila resort is some 30 kms before Skardu city. Stay at Shangrila is expensive. If you want to save money just visit the Shangrila and stay in Skardu city. There are some good hotels on the main road.
You should spare at least one week. If you can manage more then it is better. You can visit other places from Skardu (Shigar valley, Khaplu valley, Thalley valley, Satpara lake, Manthoka waterfalls, Deosai etc).

AA, what about security issues between besham and chilas and which time is better and traveling with convoy is compulsory or not, what other details other members can share.

Security concerns are there and public transport must move in a convoy. But private vehicles are not bound to travel in a convoy. They are free to move any time. But people avoid travelling between Besham and Chilas during night (due to highway robberies).
I travelled on KKH in my private car last October and crossed the Besham-Chillas portion during night. Left Chilas at about 12:30 am and reached Besham at 6: 00 am. I found only patrolling police except 2 or 3 private vehicles in 6-hour drive.

Astonishing, well brother, a great solo trip, very informative narration, i have travelled on KKH some 10 years ago and planning again, i have gained a lot of information from your post. It is a suggestion /advise not to travel alone in northern areas always have a companion.
Anyhow a great trip, good luck.
