[KKH Trip] Rawalpindi to Khunjerab Pass (9 July 2016 to 16 July 2016)

Hello all,

Thanks for sharing tips for KKH. We 8 people made plan and traveled around 2200+ kms in a week. It was full of adventure and tiredness. We all traveled on this path for the first time.

I will now share my travel diary with you all and will try to help as much as I can for the people going there for the first time.

Day 1-2 (9th July & 10th July): Reached Hunza from Rawalpindi in around 24hrs. We took path via naran/babusar top.

Day 3 (11th July): Hopar Valley.

Day 4 (12th July): Attabad lake, Khunjerab Pass and traveling back to Gilgit.

Day 5: (13th July): Gilgit to Skardu traveling

Day 6: (14th July): Deosai and Shigar valley

Day 7: (15th July): Shangrila Lake and traveling back to KKH

Day 8: (16th July): Naran and traveling back to pindi.

We missed one key place fairy Meadows due to petrol shortage on first 2 days. Else all went according to plan.

Estimated Expenses: Around 15,000 per person.

Road Condition: Perfect from Rawalpindi to Chillas, only minor rough patches. Very bad from Babusar entry to KKH start. Perfect from KKH start to Khunjerab pass. Normal road in skardu and gilgit. Rough but manageable from Gilgit to Skardu. Rough from skardu to Deosai.

Landslide Area: Gilgit to Skardu road, chillas to kkh. Deosai.

Weather: Normal in Hunza and Skardu, Hot in Gilgit, Extreme cold in Deosai, babusar and Khunjerab Pass.

Food: Cheap and quality is good. It was cheap enough that we didn't need to cook on our own.

Shopping: Best place is Gilgit. Skardu was ok. Nothing good in Hunza. Dry fruit like Apricot is cheap and very tasty.

Hotel rent: Starting from 1,500 to 2,000 for 2 bed.

People: Very good, very cooperative. Just don't engage in any religious debate.

Camping site: Can be done easily in Karimabad Hunza, Attabad lake. Didn't find any place in gilgit and skardu.

*** On the way back, if you will take babusar track, then make sure to reach babusar entry before 4PM. The entry is closed after that. That's the only path you can take because Manshera to Basaham road is very very bad.

We started our journey from Rawalpindi. We were 8 people in 2 cars.one was Corolla GLI 2013 model and the other one was Suzuki Bolan Van 2015 Green one.

As per plan we left home around 21:00. Both cars full of fuel and luckily we carried extra cans of fuel.

Our first mini stop was at Hassan Abdal. There is guy who sells very tasty anda burger. Really very tasty.

After crossing hassan abadal. We came across a major roadblock. Nearly hundred's of cars remained stuck for couple of hours. It was mainly due to road under construction and as usual people in haste.

We stopped at balakot for breakfast. We always like to cook on our own.

We then stopped at Jalkhad for Lobia. Best possible taste. This place is famous for that.

Babusar Top. This is the first time we saw this place despting visiting naran for countless time. Amazing Beautiful place.

Till now, from pindi to chillas start, we enjoyed bump free smooth road almost all the way.

This is from where things start to get dirty. From chillas start to kkh, road condition is awfully bad. Two hours of painful journey.

Forgot to mention, if you are traveling for first time, get this map. With no internet and no gps, this page is going to be life saver for you. Detailed location guide along with height and kms left.
