My experience with guest house was not so pleasant, we reached there around 12am midnight, lady who used to take care of guest house welcomed us, there was no male servant available to shift our luggage, so I did it by my self, after that I went to fulfill some legal formalities, lady enquired me about my stay, I told her that I would stay for two days and would extend my stay if I liked the area, then she asked me for the rent amount, my room rent was 3500 so I gave her 5000, As it was my first stay in any guest house so before arriving I called and talked with owner who ensured me that I would love this place and further guaranteed that If I find any problem then I don?t have to pay a single penny, that?s why I paid for single day plus 1500 advance, but lady told me that I have to pay full rent for three days, I was little surprised, as I was thinking that If I would pay full amount then how I would take amount back from them if found something wrong, but then in first look guest house look good to me so I paid three days full amount though my intention was not to stay for three days, she said if you would stay two days then we would return your remaining amount, when I was filling guest house form, owner came out from room and i had nice little chit chat with him, he also informed me that there is one paper in my room and all the instruction written on it and we strictly follow that.
After get rid of all the formalities when I entered in my room and checked bathroom, I didn?t find clean toiletries, there were some used soaps which were not removed by staff, plus insufficient hand wash.
I gave my purse and cars keys to my 8years old daughter to put in bed?s side table, and to my surprise she came back after a while with one condom packet and asking me about it, she found that in same side table, I was so embarrassed and didn?t know what to say to her but then I made some story and took packet from her and hide some where, at that moment my wife became little worried and asked me that do you think its safe to stay here, I made her relax by telling that some one forgot it by mistake so no need to worry, I wanted to call lady for toiletries but then it was late and was written on instruction paper not to call after 11pm so I didn?t feel it good to disturb them as there were only lady staff, room was good , ac was working nice so we slept well except itching whole night which we thought was because of weather change (Islamabad-Lahore).
There were two room on first floor, so when I was booking, I requested room with balcony, owner told me that room has already booked, he further told me that he has another room with kitchen where you can cooked by yourself, this was new for us, my wife told me that though we would spend and eat whole day outside but can use this kitchen for our breakfast, my wife also took utensils from home for breakfast, but when we reached there then came to know that room is not with our room but adjacent to our room and its for both room?s guest, and it was mentioned in the instruction paper that who ever room?s guest use kitchen or its utensils would have to clean it for others
Any way, next morning around 10-11am my wife went to kitchen to make breakfast for us, she found most of the utensils dirty, used by either other room guest or staff and did not clean, as my wife had her own utensil so she used it, my kids went outside and there was stairs going down, there was also a door which my daughter locked temporarily for safe side to protect my younger son 1 ? years old not to fall down, but then she forgot to open the lock, and we got busy in breakfast then that lady knocked our door and very rudely complained about locking of door , I apologized for my daughter mistake and did not say any thing about toiletries, or other problems , that lady did not stop here but start continuously complaining about my kids, that they are making so much noise, throwing every thing here and there, which was only an allegation as they didn?t do any thing like this, then I thought better not to argue with that lady, I just told her that though I informed you that we would stay here with kids but even then if you people are having problem then I can shift to hotel, then she suddenly change her tone and said no on its ok, in the end when I saw her behavior of complaining, I further cleared myself by saying that we didn?t use your utensils, its dirty and it must be used by other guest, as I wanted to stay there peacefully so I cleared this thing as didn?t want her to come again with some other complain, which I knew that will definitely spoil our mood which I didn?t want, she said no problem I will tell them to clean, you don?t need to worry, after that we went out side, and spent whole day in Lahore, came back around 12am midnight, It was mention in instruction paper that in guest absence, room will be opened and cleaned, so we were thinking when we would come back our room will be cleaned and they would put toiletries, but there was nothing , as I mention earlier that we were traveling with kids so bathroom dustbin was almost full of diapers, I told to my wife, today you some how managed I will talk with that lady in the morning as its quite late, and they might be sleeping, in the back of my mind that written instruction was there that not to disturb staff after 11pm, as it was my first stay in any guest house so I was little extra cautious, other wise in hotel I don?t care to call what ever time.
Next morning when my daughter was using bathroom toilet, exhaust fan fell off from wall, and hanged on wire, she luckily escape as exhaust fan wire length was not good enough to reach on my daughter head, and luckily wire hold the fan from falling and not break, when my daughter came out from bathroom, I went there to check what happened, I noticed that exhaust fan was not properly fix with screw or some locking plates but only kept there and on the side they put some cotton paper to hold the fan, we didn?t complain about this also, only asked lady about room service, in response she said you didn?t asked for , I said but its written that you people do it by yourself in guest absence, she said don?t worry we will do it today, after breakfast we went out and then again came in the night time, they cleared bathroom dustbin and arrange room but still no toiletries, old used soaps were also laying there, my wife showed little dissatisfaction and told me that we don?t find such problem in hotels, she told me you must write these all thing in their guest house review, then I said , that owner himself was a nice guy, he is retired army officer , he might be running this business for his bread and butter so better not to write any thing on their guest house review, then my wife said but atleast you should tell him about this all, may be he doesn?t know, guest house is very well maintain and if such things are happening it shows that their staff are not doing their job very well , on which I also agreed as building or running some thing is one thing but keeping it upto high notch involved good management, which is totally owner responsibility to check and balance, I told my wife that there is only one more night, spend it some how and in future we will not stay in any guest house, things not end here, suddenly we find our itching problem, which were bed bugs, not one or two but numerous, after seeing this we start searching our clothes and they were also there, then I start searching on internet whether they transfer any disease, got relaxed after reading result, and killing some of them, slept on place where less bugs were.
Final morning we were getting ready to check out, when my wife went out side, and then came back suddenly and told me guy is in the kitchen making some thing, I told her to wait for some time and when he finished, you prepare your breakfast (which was only tea), after some time my wife went into the kitchen found gas knob was open and kitchen was full of gas, guest house lady was ironing nearby, we were already leaving so there was no need to inform that lady about this problem but my wife thought other guest could create some serious problem because of their mistakes so she informed that lady about the gas issue for their safe side but with out any delay she told my wife, that must be your children who opened it, my wife was completely shocked that how can some one blame like this, she informed her that my kids are still on bed, they don?t even want to get up from beds, she said if not your children then who can do it, my wife said other guest used kitchen, she said their wife is out side so how can they use, my wife said I have seen him by myself that guy was using kitchen in the morning time, then that lady said ok ok no problem, my wife told me this all story in breakfast, then I thought now I would tell everything to owner because this is not the way to treat the guest, and frankly speaking for me it was like a soft prison with daily dosage of taunting from lady, soft prison as I used to control my kids voice all the times so other guest not disturbed.
I shifted all the stuff in my car by myself as there was no male servant which I told earlier, owner was sitting in launch I went there to say final goodbye and also inform about all the things so other guest don?t ruin their trip because of such treatment, as lady was quite generous by putting allegation so this time I took photographs of every thing including bed bugs, condoms, bathroom exhaust fan, and showed to owner, first he show little interest and appreciated me for feed back also showed that pic of bugs to that lady, I also told to owner that lady all the time complained about my kid?s noise, after first incident of locking door I kept my kids all the times in my room and infront of my eyes and they never came out but she still did not stop complaining about them, I also informed him that we only stayed in guest house for sleeping we used to spend whole day out and after that my kids didn?t have energy to do any thing first thing they used to do to sleep, and first thing after wake up they have to do to start exploring Lahore with me, then he replied other guest were complaining about noise from your room like some body hammering nail on the wall, I was watching owner face, that what he is saying, and then thought what to say, we used to come midnight , left room around 11am, we used to wake up one hour before leaving, so what time we nailed the wall, secondly this noise which he was complaining about, could come from some other source, may be from neighbor?s house and did he find any mark on any wall, there was not even a single scratch on their wall, plus if they had problem I already offered them on first day that I could shift in hotel if they or their guest having problem then why not they availed my offered, I usually stay outside Pakistan, when ever I get chance and when I am in Pakistan I use to visit northern areas, but this time I specially visited Lahore ,I visited Lahore as I knew that for kids zoo and funland is more important then mountain and rivers, but when ever we used to come back to guest house and check the room and bath room condition and in morning daily complaining habit of that lady ,we used to got annoyed, and started our day with bad mood,which definitely ruined our trip, so I thought to informed every single thing to owner but after few complain owner showed no interest in it, and got irritated, during these all conversation , owner voice was getting up, like he was scolding, he literally was talking like I was his some subordinate, which was not acceptable to me, as in my whole life I never saw such behavior from any hotel staff or management, he was running a business so he should be polite, , then I also start telling him about all the things which we faced including falling of exhaust fan , in response he told me that it was an accident , and it could be happened any where, then I told him that it was not an accident but negligence, as I am an engineer and I knew that fan was not properly fixed, and if it fell from 12 to 13 feet height on my daughter head could caused serious injury, he said if you are engineer it doesn?t mean you know every thing and you are talking like such accident never happen at your home, I was thinking now what to say, yes he was right an engineer doesn?t mean to know every thing but even a normal person can know that fan was not properly fixed but only kept there, and when he was giving me this reason he forgot that if some one house wall broken and fell on their kids no case registered against parents, but if same thing happen in any commercially running area or factory,first thing which police do is they arrest the owner because its owner responsibility to make that area safe for those who are using it, so colnol sahib forgot that he was also running guest house for commercial purpose, so he could not give me this reason that it can be happen any where, and when I told him about condoms incidents, he said it must be left by some guest, and its guest responsibly to remove such thing before leaving, but he forgot that I didn?t pay to that guest who left the condoms packet there but owners/management to clean room before next guest, specially if next guest is family with kids, during our conversation he said that there are few things which has to be consider and there are few things which is not to be considered, and according to him except bugs all other things are not important to be considered, at this stage his voice tone was very high and I don?t find it appropriate to continue talking with him, when I was leaving and I told him now that if you don?t find it important to be consider than I will put every thing on your guest house review then he said ,ok go ahead, and then I left, when ever my family go any where for vacation, on way back usually we discuss good thing/event which we experienced and make that tour more memorable by discussing it, but this time we all were sit quiet for very long time in car.
On way back we stopped on motorway for lunch, I noticed pimple sort of thing on my son face, I thought he had hit his face some where, I asked my wife she said it nothing but bug?s bites, not only on face but all over his body.
So that?s how my vacation ruined.
Before leaving that guest house first thing which we did, changed all our clothes, put in double plastic bag, when reached home throw in bucket of water, to minimize risk of spreading bed bug in our house.
