Lift kits, yay or nay?

Hi,

So I am based out of Karachi. I have a corolla 2014. Recently I have been thinking about modifying it by installing lift kits and using the strongest suspension and biggest tires possible. I want it to be ready for off-roading and take on rough terrains - mostly because of the poor shape of Karachi roads. I don't want to go around potholes, I want to go through them.

Have any of you done anything like that? Where in Karachi can I get some legit modifications done? Will Toyota showrooms provide this service? Also, will it have an impact on my car's average, fuel consumption, speed, and engine's overall performance.

I am not a car enthusiast so I don't have much knowledge about the technical stuff. I am just tired of Karachi's shitty roads and can't afford a jeep so I am thinking about lifting my car. Any information, thoughts, directions etc.

your post reads like a rant and dream at the same time.

an offroad converted corolla will cost you about the same as a hilux surf in the end. Offroading a corolla means you have to literally redesign the suspension to accomodate the articulation angles of your offroad suspension. It also means the factory body will become useless and new trusses and gusseting will be required.

For this you need very very deep pockets.

These lift kits are for “looks” not for actual use.

are you assuming that an offroad vehicle will ride smoother?

I'm thinking of something along the same lines. I have an old starlet. I throw in coilovers for lift, get taller mud tyres, lift just far enough to keep the axles straight. Would that suffice? I'm not looking for a smooth ride, just enough clearance to keep my travels a little adventurous.

Yes. I just want to go through the potholes without feeling like I am going through potholes. Also, I want my car to be able to take a beating from the rough roads and not require too much maintenance. I thought off-roading vehicles are built for that purpose so that's why I was exploring the idea.

It's a vehicle, ofcourse you will be feeling potholes if you are going through them. I've been in a Revo and Fortuner couple of times and it was a downgrade in terms of comfort from my Corolla Altis 1.6 which I earlier had before selling it off. Sure it went through every single bump and unpaved segment like nothing but there is no such concept of not feeling potholes if going through potholes. If you are having ground clearance issues, just get some spacers installed though it has it's own negative effects on overall stability and handling of the car in high speeds.

You can drive over open manholes without feeling them.

Only 2 or 3 exist in Pakistan and they are not cheap to own. They are “fail taknalajee in Pakistan”

You are mistaken. Offroad vehicles are stiff to avoid rollovers during quick turns and their frames and suspension are hardened to avoid breakages on tough terrain. The only comfortable offroaders are luxury ones like the prado, which compromise between offroading and comfort. Some of the best offroads - jeeps, jimny, light pickups are back breakers.

What you could do is get beefier, softer tyres - which will stress your suspension and increase your fuel consumption.
