Lost Rear Grip While Braking on a Turn – Corolla Altis 2015

Hey everyone, I had a scary moment today in my Corolla Altis 2015 1.6 Auto and wanted to share it for some insights. I was doing around 70 km/h while coming out of a turn when a rough patch of road came up suddenly. I applied the brakes while still finishing the turn. As I did that, the car suddenly lost control — it first swung to the right, then to the left. I managed to steer through it and regained control, but it was a heavy fishtail-type swing. The road was uneven, and I think the tire pressure was low (checked later: around 27 PSI). I’m wondering — shouldn’t ABS have prevented the skid? Or did ABS actually help save me from a worse outcome? I now realize I may have braked too hard while turning, and with the rear tires underinflated, that probably led to the rear losing grip. I’d love to hear your thoughts: was this mainly due to braking in a turn on bad road, low tire pressure, or both? And what’s the best way to react if this happens again?

This would be more of a traction control thing rather than abs. If you were able to steer through it to gain control while breaking your abs saved you from a worse outcome.

You probably did break too hard, I had my 2019 1.6 spin in circles on a rainy day while trying to dodge a few dogs (I was aware that trying to save the dogs would result in that, but everything was empty).

I applied the brakes while still finishing the turn.

This will shift the car's weight towards the front, the vehicle becomes lighter at the rear, tires lose traction. Brake before a turn, not during a turn.

4 million car losing grip on 70km/hr is insane.

Even a 40 million car would slip if you brake hard in loose road curve.

Braking while turning that too on an uneven road can cause the car to tail out. ABS probably has not much role in such situations. Its the job of EBD and VSA but they have their limits..

Also this mentality " 4 million car losing grip" has taken so many innocent lives.

Braking hard on sharp cornering at high speeds can be fatal for the vehicles with out Active VSC / Control .
Corolla is equipped with ABS only.
So always try to lower your speed on sharp curves along with a vigilant driving stylewith active brake thinking.

Reminds me of my friend having the exact same issue on his swift , turned out it was failing EPS motor (electronic power steering motor) on further investigation we found out that the ESP was repaired by some juggari (he had just bought the car 2nd hand) and the motor was overheating also his steering was harder compared to other normal swift and on full lock the steering would not come back more than half
We replaced the EPS with a kabuli one and the issue was fixed

The steering is very soft and is effective, one thing which i noted is that whenever i brake hard, sometime very rear the car back would skid little. Only the driver could feel that, i told mechanic he had no idea, instead he polished the rear brake drums.

Lower tyre pressure results in better grip, worse economy. Try the same turn with rear pressure at 35psi, you might even spin out.

Also drive more carefully. Especially on lose gravel, mud, sand, etc.

My guess is you entered the rough (low grip) patch while already turning at high speed. Before the rough patch car was perfectly in control, you were turning and braking. Then you enter rough patch, you realize you're losing grip, turn harder, it works but then you exit the rough patch while still turning and car regains grip and throws the rear outwards (oversteer), now you turn opposite direction to straighten the car. This will happen even in more expensive cars. It's not the car's fault.

It seems either rear axle beam bushing is broken or the front calipers are not getting enough brake fluid pressure, and rear brake cylinders are getting optimum pressure.
This happens when master cylinder connected to brake booster gets bad. It has two pipes, and one pipe is connected on first push of brake washers that is the one recieving immediate hydraulic pressure is for front wheels and second one is usually for rear wheels. So sometimes mechanic changing the cylinder install pipes in wrong direction, in that case rear brakes recieve the brake pressure at first and front little less.

Sometimes lines get clogged. So u will have to cross verify this. And secondly examine front brakes, the pads, the brake calipers I hope they're not stuck.

So this model doesn't have a habit of spinning around
As other members shared the cases they are worst case scenarios. And in worst case scenarios anything can happen. But in your case it looks some failure is there hidden.
