Maintaining UPS/car batteries

Backup time is directly related to amount of load you put onto the batteries and if load is same but backup time has reduced then you need to look for the reasons.
For 165 AMP-HR batteries, charging rate should not be more than 15 amperes, system should cut off at 14 Volts for single battery system and 28 Volts for two batteries in parallel. Don?t assume that since Voltage in your area is down so you need to increase the charging rate. Whatever the voltage maybe, transformer steps it down and makes you available 14 Volts at battery terminal at which it suppose to cut off charging. Further, you can verify the charging rates using AMP-Meter.
During backup mode, you further need to adjust the output voltage to around 250 Volts with systems fully charged once enter into load shedding. I hope batteries are not damaged because of overcharging, you can try flush as its not time consuming job if you already have an access to good electrolyte. Finding good electrolyte maybe an issue.

Yes load remains same. As mentioned earlier when I use 2nd wire of transformer (not counting 0v wire) for charging, battery voltage never seems to cross 13.5V mark and keeps charging for many hours... result more bill so I have to revert it back to first charging wire of transformer next to 0v wire.
I have already set the output voltage at 250v by connecting the load lead to 2nd last wire of transformer and checked with multimeter... however I can't test AMPS as I don't have clamp meter ..

For now I don't wanna do flush but sure will like to know if I can top up the low level of water with PYRO electrolyte instead of PHOENIX de-ionized water which I am currently using?

Usually you can do the following things, rest experienced members can comment further

[*]Flush the batteries, like fill it with water and drain it for 5-6 times so that you may get rid of loose material present in-between the plates and at bottom. Then prepare the solution of distilled water and Espiom salt and put it on slow charging like 3-5 Amperes for one or two days. But for that you need an access to handsome amount of distilled water and good electrolyte either prepared with distilled water or de-ionized water to be poured later.

Entire exercise is useless if you don’t have an access to good electrolyte.

Thanks for your valuable reply....I already ordered and received a 30 kg can of distilled water and 30 kg can of electrolyte from pyro and they are lying with me ....Batteries under consideration are two exide 100 AH of my LC which are only six months old....I last driven vehicle about a month back and after that because of bad health ...could not use it...tried to charge the batteries but failed and a suspended layer of sulfate is present on top of the plates....I tried to find epsom salt from two big stores but no success ....What it is called in URDU and and from where I can get it most likely.....further more ...your comments on pulse charging....
One thing more....what is the recommended charging voltage for "LEAD CALCIUM" batteries....As long as I can recall ...it is 14.8 volts ...please confirm....Battery underconsideration is AC DELCO two years old 66 AH "DIN"...

I have few questions in that regard, firstly how to measure the gravity at home?
2.so the mixture must have 66:33 (1/3) mixing ratio?
3. doing it to your car battery would require full flush of the battery before introducing new mixture?
4. where to get pure/lab grade acid and what grade is the acid available in 100 ml bottle for batteries is it pure acid or the usual mixture?

and any other advice / to do not to do things specially what tom about the bluish crust that u often find on terminals how to handle them

1. yes approximately, but if you are preparing the electrolyte then you mix it in this ratio and later you can do adjustment by adding more distilled water as lot will evaporate because of heat produced. I will never recommend that you prepare electrolyte at home, take help from professional and supervise him. You need hydrometer to measure specific gravity normally available in market for around Rs 150.

1. Flush is not very effective on small batteries but if you fill a good electrolyte from very first day then you will get the best results.

1. Try to buy electrolyte form a good manufacturer who prepares it with de-ionized or distilled water if you can find one. 100 ml bottles you see in market is basically de-ionized water which maybe slightly mixed with acid.

1. If you find this bluish crush then clean it and its better you buy new terminals and does not let it form. It limits the amount of current which passes through the terminal.

1. Yes, people want to avoid flushing because of time related issues, sure the last and only resort is that you maintain the level using good de-ionized or distilled water.
2. You need to cross verify the charging rates using a good AMP-Meter, I know you know how to change the charging rate but you need to look into figures. Maybe first option is very slow but we don’t know yet. If you can quote numbers then it will be helpful for me.

I can’t comment on lead calcium batteries as have no knowledge but can so on lead acid batteries normally available in market. Its good that you have bought the distilled water and electrolyte. But you need to find out what sort of electrolyte is used in lead calcium batteries. Don’t put a wrong electrolyte as I don’t know anything about the lead calcium batteries you are quoting.

I would not advise you to buy concentrated acid as its very dangerous for a novice. Try to contact pryo chemicals in Lahore and ask them to ship you their electrolyte if you can do so.

Above everything, trying to buy acid before having distilled water in hand is useless as you can ask battery shop to give you the same electrolyte which you will get with tap water.

You can get Epsom salt (Magnesium Sulfate) from a market that sells laboratory equipment. Enter these coordinates in Google search and you will find the location.

Call pride seed store. I think they have it. But it will be more expensive than getting it from the laboratory equipment market.

Gravity can't be fine if "all" the water gets evaporated, if the plates of ur battery are not black by now... U can flush ur battery electrolyte, put new from pyro,.. And slow charge it at 4amps for about 48hrs,.. This will rejuvenate its power and solve the heat up.

Bdw whats the charging speed of ur ups? How many amps

i took the battery to a shop today, drained all the water got it filled with new acid from the shop, checked the gravity and it was ok,
brought it back home connected with ups, its been more than five hours the ups is charging the battery, battery is getting hot again and alot of bubbles are forming in the cells

Adjust the charging cut-off. You will destroy the battery like this. Your battery is old now.
