Maintaining UPS/car batteries

It is a Chinese brand and assembled in pk for tax reduction... MZ is more expensive and probably lower in quality for the same reason because it is China import.. Anyhow

Homage's this year lot did had 10-20amp conversion button + a button to enable it to operate in even very low voltage!

So it would have been a good deal, anyways Allah Mubarik kary!

Did u check with the authorised company outlet? Or just another UPS seller? coz they'd try to sell whatever THEY have in stock! Not what company has freshly launched.

Hi.

My ups is not giving the backup it used to give months ago- Max is 1 hour with 1 fan, 1 laptop and 1 Wifi modem + 3 energy saver bulbs.

What do i need to check, and what tools do i need? I believe it has something to do with the battery, and i am worried:s

That’s not a news as most come to this forum because of a backup problem. But that sole news does not helps anyone assist you solve your problem. Where is cutoff Voltages, charging rates, output Voltages, Battery AMP-HR ratings, battery AGE, UPS type. Go through older posts in order to know how to determine these variables.

Nice Thread. dont u think that UPS on the continuous float charge will ultimately effect the life of battery. because these batteries are basically made for vehicles not UPS and there is automatic charging cut off system in vehicles. my 2nd question: people generally confuse the battery product name with the amp of batteries for example AGS or Exide GL50/ NS50ZL battery is actually 36 or 38 amp battery so dont u think that the formula for charging i.e amp/10 will lead to wrong charging amp

Answer: No. at 28 Volts and 1 AMP of charging will not say anything to your batteries.

Answer: what other solution do you have as we don’t have deep cycle battery available here in Pakistan. Because of Monopoly from manufacturers.

ANSWER: Yes somewhat, mostly datasheet does not comes with battery and this information is also mostly missing on manufacturers website. So mostly NA 50, NS 65 corresponds closely with 50 AMP-HR or 65 AMP-HR. Most of local UPS has three options to charge the batteries and that is either 5 Amperes, 18 Amperes and 28 Amperes so we know if its NL 220 then it would be roughly between 180 AMP-HR to 220 AMP-HR so 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and first option can be choose based on our requirement. If you know exactly then that’s is an ideal scenario. This has already been discussed in details in previous posts.

I never invite shopkeeper suggestion. I always make my mind after my own search n research. Btw shopkeeper tried to sell me mercury n cyber pwr.

Mercury and cyberpower both are also very good arent they? Mercury is transformer based na? What was its price and warranty? Does mercury has a proper aftersales support centre like homage?

Ok Today i again checked Gravity of all my 3 Volta batteries and the Gravity was 1250-1270 in all cells of batteries and i am happy because 2 days before it was 1190-1200

This is a fabulous thread having loads of information about batteries ,their maintenance and Ups Etc ...Very informative indeed...as its a big thread and its not possible for me to go through every page however I have read 20/25 pages randomly....
Mab be it was discussed in the earlier pages ....but I came across only one post about "SULFATION" in the very first page I think .....
As you know that sulfation is a big issue and main cause of premature failure of the batteries which are neglected ,less used or stay dis charged for longer periods...
Sulfated batteries may or may not be recovered depending upon the state of sulfation, battery age and many other factors...
I would request the experts to shed some light on desulfation methods...electrical like "PULSE CHARGING" and chemical like "EPSOM SALT" or "ALUM"...etc...
Please share your personal experience about Desulfation ,success rate of desulfation and educate us about this...

Desi UPS 700W (Lahore Electronics kit)
Phoenix 165AH battery(1 year old)
Charging current set to ~20Amps (Tested by UPS guy last year at installation May 2012)
Voltage in our area: 170-180V (extreme summers) 190-200v (now a days)
SG of battery: 12.20~
Load: 1 fan, 2 energy savers

In first season it gave me backup for up to 9+ hours continuous (tested) but now a days it has been reduced to 3~ hours. Battery voltage 3-4 hours after full charge is 12.2 - 12.3 V. As voltage in our area is low so I have to always keep charging to max amps (that is connected to first transformer wire after 0v wire). If I reduce the charging amps, battery never gets full due to low voltage. Now my question is CAN I use Pyro ELECTROLYTE to top up my batter whenever water level decreases?? Currently I am using Phoenix de-ionized battery water for it.

Please address both my questions, I don't wanna flush it now due to shortage of space and time.. Thanks.

Little bit bubbling is common in UPS setup. But i saw bubbles being generated from bottom of battery and rising fluid level to the point where fluid came out of the vent tubes.
Shaking the battery little bit releases lots of trapped air bubbles. What could be the problem

Usually you can do the following things, rest experienced members can comment further

1. Flush the batteries, like fill it with water and drain it for 5-6 times so that you may get rid of loose material present in-between the plates and at bottom. Then prepare the solution of distilled water and Espiom salt and put it on slow charging like 3-5 Amperes for one or two days. But for that you need an access to handsome amount of distilled water and good electrolyte either prepared with distilled water or de-ionized water to be poured later.
2. perform flush, like I was told you above and fill the batteries with good electrolyte and put it on slow charging and let the system charge and discharge for few cycles.

Entire exercise is useless if you don’t have an access to good electrolyte.

Charging and discharging produces hydrogen gas which you are experiencing in forms of bubbles. Battery caps have a small hole in-order to get rid of these gases and this is normal. Look into the equations of lead acid batteries then you will understand. Heating of electrolyte can be because of number of reasons, check the gravity of electrolyte, charging rate and cut off voltages.

Backup time is directly related to amount of load you put onto the batteries and if load is same but backup time has reduced then you need to look for the reasons.
For 165 AMP-HR batteries, charging rate should not be more than 15 amperes, system should cut off at 14 Volts for single battery system and 28 Volts for two batteries in parallel. Don’t assume that since Voltage in your area is down so you need to increase the charging rate. Whatever the voltage maybe, transformer steps it down and makes you available 14 Volts at battery terminal at which it suppose to cut off charging. Further, you can verify the charging rates using AMP-Meter.
During backup mode, you further need to adjust the output voltage to around 250 Volts with systems fully charged once enter into load shedding. I hope batteries are not damaged because of overcharging, you can try flush as its not time consuming job if you already have an access to good electrolyte. Finding good electrolyte maybe an issue.

I have few questions in that regard, firstly how to measure the gravity at home?
2.so the mixture must have 66:33 (1/3) mixing ratio?
3. doing it to your car battery would require full flush of the battery before introducing new mixture?
4. where to get pure/lab grade acid and what grade is the acid available in 100 ml bottle for batteries is it pure acid or the usual mixture?

and any other advice / to do not to do things specially what tom about the bluish crust that u often find on terminals how to handle them
