Maintaining UPS/car batteries

Yup my batteries are connected in series,i,e a 24 v UPS. So 14 AMP is right value.i have 2 desi UPS and i tested both,at the end of backup time one battery is at 11.70 something and other is 9.8,this sounds crazy but it is true.when fully charged both give 12.2 v
i have tested the gravity but i think my hydrometer is faulty.
i am gonna do 2 things
1: today buy a new hydrometer
2: i have another imported Aurora UPS in Sargoda,i will go this weekend and fetch that up and will post results again

gravity is not equal in some cells.it means its battery fault.

Your second battery is bad as 9.8 Volts indicate that and as you said that C.G is not same on every cell.

This normally happens once we pour the electrolyte in battery for first time as seller must have over filled the battery or electrolyte which is absorbed in plates initially must be coming out and mixing with one in battery. During charging, plates get rids of sulfuric acid which mixes back with original electrolyte and during discharging it absorbs the sulfuric acid again. So this process goes over and over again. Just adjust the level of electrolyte in battery according to its indicated mark by removing excess using hydrometer. Nothing to get worried about and manufacturing date is ok.

Secondly, you need to adjust the charging rate and cut of voltage to 28Volts once charging should stop. Since maximum AMP-HR rating of these battery won’t be more than 100 AMP-HR as your battery is AGS GR-100 so correct charging rate should be 5-6 amperes maximum.

Do the first yourself and supervise the second by taking help from UPS guy.

interesting thing,when i bought batteries and i told them not to put acid in them, i will do it and charge myself,then guy told me that in such case 4% concession is rule.so instead of 11400, bill was 10800. and pyro chemical electrolyte 24 bottles of 500 ml were in Rs 740.so instead of buying battery in its local price and then buying pyro chemicals,if we use this rule then electrolyte cost can be omitted.
So my advice to guys who want to manually put electrolyte in batteries,they should insist battery walas to give them 4% discount
1st bargain them of local price than tell them you will put electrolyte yourself,then you may save some more
like mine started at 11800,than i brought him to 11400 and than 4% more:P

i asked the my battery wala for such a discount instead he charged 500 more from me and prepared electrolyte from AGS distilled water for my phoenix XP 220

My above post was to prepare it yourself or buy it from Pyroo chemicals etc...than you ask for that discount

Its up to you what you want to buy, you can but imported homage or local single battery UPS but in that case its important that you get that adjusted. I would recommend phoenix UGS 215 prepared with distilled water and sulfuric acid for your requirement. This UGS series from phoenix is specifically manufactured by company for UPS. Cost of UGS 215 is Rs 15000 but you can sell your old battery if you have one to get the price adjusted. I have installed two UGS 215 for my double battery UPS in my home.

If you are based in Rawalpindi/Islamabad then you can buy de-ionized water form the source mentioned above and ask the battery shop to prepare electrolyte in a clean container using it for you.

You are so right, first bargain the price then further tell them what if you don’t want to use their electrolyte so ask them to reduce the price. They will happily do it for you as I do it all the time once I want to buy a battery.

Ok dear thanks for detail reply.after first charge boiling stoped.i want to know about initial charge..I read on net that initial charging should be at least 8 hrs..but my ups charged batteries in 1.5 hrs and I started using it after 2 hrs.

As I already said that there are two important variables such as cutoff Voltage and charging rate. You need voltmeter , AMP-meter or good quality multimeter with functions of both to adjust that. Had I been in your place then I would have initially adjusted the charging rate to 3 amperes and cut off to 29 volts. later after 6-7 hours of charging, I would have fine tuned them to 5 -6 Amperes and cutoff to 28 Volts.

Most likely charging rate is very high that’s why It charged so quickly.

no i said i will arrange electrolyte myself he insisted to get it prepared from him and it turned cheap for me as i also had to pay freight for that pyro electrolyte coz i dont live in lahore

In that scenario, it is always recommended to buy batteries as recommended by UPS manufacturer in terms of its amp-hr rating. I though, Homage offered has two options for changing the charging rate, one is high and one is low. First, you need to exactly measure the charging rate and it maybe within specs or higher which yet we don’t know.

take help from members who uses Homage as i have never tried that.

i don’t see any harm with UPS placed in front of Split AC and you should be ok with cutoff set at 14V, 14.1V, 14.2V.

look guys the loadshedding condition is not gonna improve for next 3 years,so kindly buy ampere meter, a hydrometer and a voltmeter to monitor your UPS and battery systems ,otherwise you will be in vicious spiral of buying batteries every year and throwing your hard earned money in battery walas pockets

Just wanted to inform about AGS batteries. I installed two AGS NS 175 last season in Feb 2013 till now AL-HUMD-UL-LILLAH working flawlessly....... Till now it gives 1.5 hour backup on 3 fans

I recommend to use AGS batteries before that i was using OSAKA and had the worst experience like the battery doesn't even last for 9 months......

P.S I also use to maintain and check the battery water level as well as the UPS charging rate

Previously, I used to use pyro battery water to top up the batteries. But I have observed that Pyro water is not as clean as it should be. I have observed white cloud several times in the bottles and also the smell of fungus which mean it is not that good quality distilled water. Now, I have switched to AGS battery tonic (distilled water) and it is the best and most pure distilled water available in market. One litre bottle costs around 53 rupees (price mentioned on bottle). But if you buy in bulk that is if you buy its whole carton, you will get it for 600 rupees or less. One carton carries 12 bottles. Always ask the dealer for a discount. AGS battery water is also available in 500 ml bottles. So, you can go for that option. Regarding its availability, it is available at authorized AGS battery dealers. But if you don't find it, ask me. I know a dealer in Lahore who sells it.
