Rear axle bearings need to be generously packed - but not overfilled - with NLGI#2 EP-rated grease before installation into a clean bore with new bearing seals.
Your mechanic might be damaging the race(s) during install, especially if he's banging away at it with a metal hammer rather than a mallet.
Find someone else to do the install, and make sure to have the correct grease.
