Misconceptions about HIDs & Projectors!

with all the discouraging goinn on over HIDS... i am compelled to share my experience as well..

[LEFT]i am not against HID, but I am against HIDS of 6000 Kelvin and above which are for show car only...mostly..

any way I have installed 4300 Kelvin HIDs in my car with lens optic headlamp... with excellent results.
HIDs in reflector optic headlamps as in the newer civics and city's has bad results..and the light just spreads badly..

lens optic is basically the old method of distribution of light where the front glass of the headlight has prismatic patterns and it determines the angle of light escaping the headlamp....

those used in cars upto late 90's mostly, where you cant see in from the glass...

I still do see a lot of glare though.All reflectors do not act the same, some produce more glare than others.

4300K is the color of sunlight and gives the highest number of lumens which in turn increases visibility

The correct word for them is fluted lens.The photo shown by Minex is of a fluted lens.

Fluted lens do block some light, so in turn they reduce some glare but the difference is negligible.

there is an energy saver light source which is illuminated at the wall in the picture above the cut off region.. i will try to share a picture with no other lightsource on..a little closer to the wall..

there is some glare ... but i dont get flashign headlights from oncomming traffic at night time even on a two way traffic road so i guess others are not disturbed.

I have aimed them to stay as low as possible while giving me enough visibility..

4300k: my prime reason for 4300 K was better visibility.. and this is the same color as in almost all newer cars comming with HIDs from factory.
and this color does not disturb the oncomming traffic... blue and purple are killing colors...

plus i would like to mention that this color give a super visibility on wet & rainy condition....so can actually clearly see the texture of the road when its black...sumthing which the halogen fails at

Thread of the Century, and I mean it, hard copy of this info should be distributed on all car "DECOR" shops and drivers on roads. This info might make Pakistani roads a safer place to drive

i've tried explaining this to so many people but they still fit HID's to their cars without doing theor research. also i find it hilarious when peole fit HIDs to their high beams not realizing that these lights hate thermal change and is a huge reason for them failing.

Its good that you don't get flashed by oncoming traffics, which tells me you have aimed them low enough.

A tleast you have taken the time to think about others on the road, which so many of the "cool" people these days do not bother to do, and I applaud your effort.

Thank you for the compliments. Right now people are more bothered with resale than to even think about other people on the road.

Thanks for posting the pics.Indeed your headlamps are far better aimed and fluted lens also help.

The color also seems to be yielding handsome visibility.

I should also point out the glare now

If you look at the 1st picture,you will notice light leaking onto the wall and is going towards the sky.

BUT: I still applaud your efforts to reduce glare by choosing a color that is much easier on the eye and also the fact that you have aimed them lower.

This is indeed a very informative thread...

There is no doubt that in the market there are a variety of HID head lamps available but once fitted don't really make the visibility better.

The main reason for this is that the standard fitted HIDs... say in a BMW are of the color temperature 5200k. Now the way this goes is that the lower the color temperature the better the penetration. By the way penetration means the spread and visibility of the light. Standard halogen lamps have color temperatures somewhere between 4000k and 4500k(therefore best penetration).

Now if you are enthusiastic about modifying your head lights but don't actually have the budget to replace the whole head light... what you can do is to look for commercially available HIDs with color temperature of 6000k. These are a little hard to find and the shop owners will insist you buy the 8000k but don't give out and look for the 6000k.

I have the 6000k installed on my Liana Eminent ... and I'm very much satisfied with the result. By the way the lights I bought set me back about 5000 Rs. I fitted it myself! (H)

Okay if your talking about cost effective than here are my recommendations.

The most easily available in Pakistan would be the Phillips Rally bulb which runs at a higher wattage than stock bulbs in cars.That would get you the best results while keeping your pocket all filled up.

Now, if you are willing to spend the equivalent of HID money and want better results, than go for the Phillips X-Treme Bulbs, you will have to import them as they are not available in Pakistan.Phillips X-Tremes are by far the best Halogen bulbs without question.

An alternate to the X-Tremes would be the Osram Night Breakers, which you would also have to import.

So I'll conclude and suggest that go for the Phillips Rally bulbs and also install fog lights with yellow bulbs.

(Never ever buy the cheap blue bulbs that you can get for Rs.300-500, stock bulbs are far better than them and they are just a mere gimmick)
