I would recommend Corolla Fielder (gasoline) 1500cc AWD. It's based on Corolla so you can get all mechanical and general spare parts from local Toyota and get maintenance done from dealerships. The All Wheel Drive capability makes the car excellent in turns and good acceleration/torque delivery. Resale is as good as a GLi.
Plus, the rear reclining seats are a great thing.
