Modern Low cost housing for the Poor in Pakistan

Listen to this. I just came across this article about the low cost houses for the poor in Pakistan. Lately, we have been hearing all the bad news from Paksitan but this is one Ray of Hope, that I thought I must share with you fellow Pakistanis.

Each house costs Rs345,000 including the cost of material, manufacturing machines, capital cost and other overheads. However, after successful technology transfer, the per unit cost will come down to Rs250,000.

“It would be like living in a mansion with a kitchen, verandah and bedrooms,” said 43-year-old Sat Bai, of Jaffar Jamari, looking at her new abode. Abdul Majeed, 31, said, “Had I put in a life time’s earnings, I would not have built such a big and beautiful house.”

that really is some great news, nowdays all we hear is problems problems problems, it's great to hear that someone is thinking (and doing something abotu) solutions.

if a solar water heater (heated by the sun) is added and some solar panels (for energy) you can imagine how the long term cost of ownership would be low and how much more desirable these places would be.

too bad our goventment isn't promoting green solutions at the moment!!

housing for the 'poor'? What is this discrimination all about? To me its a step to segregate the have nots from the rich..an attempt to cut the underprivilaged from main-stream living. Getting rid of the kachi abadi and tents from the society to enhance the beauty of the city will only increase the gap between the rich and poor. Similar measures were tried in western europe in pre-renaissance period and it failed miserably.

Even communism had better approach to this issue - 60.35 square feet of free accommodation per person (except for teachers and doctors).

It is housing for the underprivileged; calling them poor would be discriminatory.

To me its a step to segregate the have nots from the rich..an attempt to cut the underprivilaged from main-stream living.

They are already segregated, living in mostly subhuman conditions. Providing them with a shelter they can honestly call home is certainly a step in the right direction. No worries about loosing their current makeshift arrangements and they get to legally own their homes.

Similar measures were tried in western europe in pre-renaissance period and it failed miserably.

Don't know how it is now in Europe but in the US there are many organizations that help low income individuals get their own home by providing material assistance. Habitat for Humanity is the most visible organization, run by President Carter. They are doing incredible work.

I like this. When there's nothing you hear except problems. A solution should be appreciated!!!

A similar approach has been undertaken and implemented by the CDGK for finishing the Thela culture. Shops made of Fibres are installed in various markets on the footpaths(which is another argument) on low rent. But that will curb bhatta khori etc!!
