I have been often asked the question, which is the best Honda you have ever owned?
i have personally loved the looks of EG civic Hatchback, but the best Honda has ever produced, in my opinion is the EF civic and then there is the best of the best, Honda CRX. only around 850kg (Gen 2), it gave a fuel average similar to what modern hybrid cars give (65 miles per gallon on the original CRX), Awesome handling due to dual wishbone front and rear suspension and very low centre of gravity, That all mated with a B16 Vtec 160bhp (SiR) makes it the complete package, even the Si with DOHC ZC or D16A8 (Australian Market) with 130bhp makes it nimble on its feet and a quick car.
You will be lucky to see one on the roads in US, UK, Australia and even Japan these days, which makes it a very rare car.
I had the pleasure of owning an EF8 SiR (with Glass top), EF7 Si (hard top) and an Australian delivered ED9, which was my parts car so never drove it or kept it like my other cars.
Owning one these days is a big commitment, Firstly its close to impossible to find a Gen 2 CRX which is not rusted, due to the age of the car being close to 34-36 years old. secondly most of the cars were abused and badly modified having held the image of a cheap affordable sports car that was a daily driven car for most people at the time. On top of that the availability and price of the parts, if someone wants to restore them is unbelievably high. so if someone wants to go that path of restoring, one has to be a fully committed Honda die-hard fan, otherwise it just doesn't make any damn sense, certainly not financially.
The EF8 i had, once i was done with the restoration, costed me around $36k AUD and when it was time to move it on (worst decision ever), i sold it for $30k. That clarifies the not making any sense part
Out of all my cars that i have owned, that's the one i missed the most and i decided that some day i will commit to the same mistake again but will not sell the car this time and hold on to it for as long as i can.
So here we are, i came across this ad for a CRX on FB marketpalce, The car was in Canberra and stayed there its whole life being an ED9 Australian delivered CRX. Now the weather of Canberra is such that the cars does not rust at all, so when i saw the ad i kind of knew that if i am going to go ahead with a CRX, this has to be the one. Plus, the front end was converted to JDM CRX (EF6/EF8) which again in my opinion is are the best looking CRXs. The front end conversion alone (fenders, Bonnet, bumper, JDM Plastic headlights and corner lights, long bumper indicators and bumper support/cross member) costs around 4K to 5K AUD, so having that already done on the car was a good starting point.
I booked a flight to Canberra with the intention of driving the car back to Melbourne which is around a 700 kms trip. I was a bit worried about a couple of things, 1, i booked a one way ticket and if i didn't like the car it will be a bit of a hassle finding tickets back to Melbourne as not a lof of flights go that route and not to mention the time wasted plus disappointment. 2, will the car be in a good mechanical condition to be driven 700km when i pick it up as there is no Roadworthy requirement specially if you purchase the car from interstate. I hoped the answers were Yes and Yes.
I liked the car, it had absolutely no rust, even the original sunroof panel which is notoriously known to rust was in excellent condition, when i test drove the car it was driving very straight with no strange squeaks and rattle, the previous owner was a mechanic and a Rally car driver/enthusiast, you will see his Rally cars in the Background of some of the pics.
I drove it back home with Zero issues and there were some kids on the way who saw the car and wanted to have a little fun, they were in their 2024 VW Tiguan, they were not able to overtake me and i touched 200km/h at one point, i did not intend to do that as i try to drive as safe as i can but the car was so confident in its drive that i sort of got the feeling that it will do it without any issues. Got a big thumbs up from all for of the blokes after i finally let them slide :D.
Here are some Pics, all taken by the previous owner, i am busy ordering parts left right and centre. i will list the parts and their prices in the posts to follow, BTW bough the car for $10k AUD after very long negotiations and brought him down from 14K to 10K.
