I once gave a thought to to a similar project for a bike and did some research but I dont understand what a controller does. And is it necessary to install it since the motor is 72V and you're providing it 72V through the batteries so it should just start going by directly connecting it to the batteries.

@Owais - unfortunately its not that simple. These PM motors require a PWM (Pulse width modulator) - so if I supply the motor straight 72V it would catch fire, burn out and die. The pulsating system is what the controller does. Also, the controller makes sure what pulses to give given the motor speed. If you are coasting and the motor is running at 2000 rpm the controller figures out how to translate that 'tap on the gas pedal'

Controllers are the heart. This industry is pretty developed now. You can get chinese motor controllers!!! You can also get cheap american ones. Bikes are very tricky and you need to work with Hub motors. You also probably need LiFePo4 batteries since there is no place to hold lead acid batteries in the bike.

Thank you for clearing that out for me (Y) About the bike, I was thinking of using its own transmission and everything and just replace the engine with the motor and use 40 amp batteries and a motor with lower volts. Would've been an ugly sight with the batteries hanging around it he he.

ITS ALIVEEE!!!!! I cant believe it worked without any sparks flying or last minute spontaneous explosions. Amazing. The car has PLENTY of torque. Should be on the street shortly. Couldn't take it out for a drive as golimar was flooded and I didnt wanna risk the water.

@c123pk: Exactly $3700 for the motor, motor controller, battery charge monitor, 72v to 12v DC DC Convertor and the Battery charger. That includes shipping as well. Probably cheaper now.

@c123pk : Indeed. Though I got a running mehran for PKR 90,000 Sold the engine, fuel tank, silencer, radiator for around 15k so less than $1000

You also have batteries which is the main component. I used shitty Osaka UPS IT 600 (best choice of battery for this application - they have thick plates and are somewhat deep cycle). 6 batteries=PKR 32,000

All said and done. Commercially produced and properly engineered, I think I can reproduce the car for a market sale price of say $6,500 or even less. I believe my motor and controller is overkill for the weight of the mehran. I hope I am true and am able to use a 48V DC system in the next car. That is definitely true with a Fiber body. With that the price can drop significantly - the motor / controller / charger combo can go as low as $1500.

@smartboy_am : Excellent man. Its very torque(y) right from the start. Since its a motor it has equal torque at all RPMs, even at 0 - its a amazing feeling. The best part is your almost never need to use the clutch - it doesnt stall or anything unlike a ICE car. You can also sneak up on people - its TOTALLY silent I love it. Just need to test how far the batteries takes it!

We need videos of the proper test. And in terms of performance, is it quicker than a ice mehran? What speed have you acheived?
