If you havent driven it to its potential, you may wonder what the thread's about ?What exactly is a Toyota starlet kp60 - 61?
It was based as a small car smaller than corolla ke70. in terms of width and length, and weight. shares a similar engine design to ke70. Major difference is its less heavier. total weight of deluxe model was 800 kg and standard version was even less a couple of kg.
The driven train is quite short shaft 4 speed rearwheel drive with 3k engine. gear ratios is quite short due to low rpm low horsepower motor, does not have a limited slip diff. makes it easier to manage for amatuer drivers.
The mechanics are designed without power steering, power brake, pressured clutch.the cons are its steering is heavier at very low speed . but wth a 155/80/13 tire. its pretty much managable for average person. clutch isnt soft. pops up resonably hard. brakes wont let car skid. its not recomemded to drive stock car above 120km plus because disc brakes are without booster. though it can go faster and very stable at speed.
i can go on but coming to point- where is the catch in kp60?
its in the handling design of shorter wheel base, all four wheels on coilsprings give stable drive on uneven road .cornering is fun , you dont brake if you can see there ahead from corner. unfortunately in bigger cities you cant corner fast, there is always someone going slow.you can drift it at speed and accelerate at corner. see what happens. it takes a smooth turn much faster than your landcruiser or vigo rwd.
surprised?.
yes if the car is lowered and built with ae86 performance parts and swaped with a 4age motor. its a mean fun machine. goes like a bullet. around the corners.cars with longer body behind rearwheels have more weight at rear with swing out like a bat more. it swings out less.
If you take it to a circuit. lowered to gound and negativecamber at front. you d be surprised by the handling of this little car.
kp60 VS ae86.
kp60 is capable of giving tough competition to ae86 on track. I havent been able to test both on circuit, as there are no circuits here . but even driving both i was able to guess a built kp60 is very good competition to many new sports car on circuit.
